RE: Week 2 - WTA International ($250,000) - Hobart, Australia - Hard

Really pleased to see a win.  Her first 2 singles matches in the Hopman Cup seemed so wild that I feared for her progress this season.  In retrospect, I think it was as posters here have suggested, trying for too much against much higher ranked players.  With some wins now under her belt she'll hopefully approach such match-ups a bit more calmly as the season moves forward.

Good win Hev, good fight to overturn the first set. No idea how the match with Sloane will go.

They were at least 1 - 5 down in the match tie break.  It was quite an exciting finish !!

Didn't realise Sloane had dropped that far down the rankings. Talented girl, but depends what side of the bed she gets out....

Watching the Hev v Cornet match, Hev seemed to struggle to turn the pace of Cornet's groundstrokes against her. At times she tried to outhit her rather than soak it up A-Rad style. This led to being overpowered, wild unforced errors, bad timing, or all three. I wondered whether she had a male hitting partner (other than her coach) as a full-time hitting partner would prove super helpful? There's not a lack of Brits looking for this kind of gig either!

Right they changed the draw after Lepchenko's withdrawal, thought I'd royally made a mistake there.

Solid win, and did exceptionally well to win that first set when it didn't look good.

And so its Sloane up next. Great H2H as well. As Fitzy's no longer part of Sloane's camp, I feel I can reveal a little bit of inside information and I'm sure Fitzy won't mind. Had a nice chat with Fitzy at Birmingham last year, Paulisi was there too, and we talked a little about Sloane's negative H2H with Hev. He basically admitted that Sloane has a complete mental block when playing Hev, so fingers crossed that continues. However these matches were played when Hev played a less aggressive baseline game, and she just frustrated Sloane into lots of poor errors, so maybe for 1 game only it might not be a bad idea to revert to her original style.

This will be streamed, and then uploaded in full onto Hobart's youtube channel for us all to watch in the morning.

I doubt Hev will use a more defensive style as Plan A, but it certainly could prove to be a useful tactic. If Sloane has a mental block playing heather, it's vital that heather starts well and doesn't give Sloane some early belief that this time it will be different.

Ooh, I feel all suspicious after reading that. Come on Hev!

Madison Brengle is through to the second round having beaten Mona Barthel so may put Naomi's loss in some perspective...
