Naomi takes the first set 64

Despite lots of aces anf winning 70% behind her first serve she has been broken twice. Could do with upping the first serve in % a little

Good to see Naomi getting a win - and against a (slightly) higher-ranked player too

She has played Brengle once before - way back in 2007 at the Orange Bowl, when the American won 2 & 4.

Brengle looked very solid against Kanepi in Brisbane this week - Mad qualified and got through to round 2, and looks in decent form. Happy to see Naomi getting a win, and hopefully she pulls a surprise in the next round.

Very pleasantly surprised to read of a solid looking win by Naomi. Be really good if she can find her mojo again.

Judged by the rankings, it's a remarkably open field for this one, with the main draw acceptance from rankings 29 to 60.

For Heather, in terms of her own position on the rankings list, that makes it an important tournament - lots of what would be called six-pointers in football.

(I think that Heather's next priority should be to break into the world's top 32, and get seeded for the Slams. The girls that she needs to outperform to do that are nearly all here at this tournament.)

Spot on. Seeded for Wimbledon should be her first/main goal.

With Heather's relative second half of 2014 drop off combined with her Roland Garros 110 points and Eastbourne 185 points ( unfortunately due to Wimbledon 2015 starting a week later ) coming off by 22/06/15, being seeded for Wimbledon is a really tough ask. She actually looks to have a lot better chance of being seeded for the French Open.

Current WR 32 is on 1371 points.

This coming Monday, 12/01, Heather will be on 1012 points.

Of the counters that make up that 1012 points, 582 points are 'banked' by Roland Garros seeding date, but only 287 ( i.e. 582 - 110 - 185 ) by Wimbledon seeding date.

So Heather will probably need to rack up over a 1000 points between now and Wimbledon ( excluding the week before ).

Basically Wimbledon is at about the worst time for Heather likely being in the top 32. The French Open and then later in the year ( after a hopefully good second half ) are more realistic.

But if she was seeded for Wimbledon that would be great and would promise a really good year-end ranking.
