Boys & Girls: 51st Coffee Bowl, Costa Rica, hard - Grade 1 (Week 1)

Emily Arbuthnott squeaked through her opening match here today, but Georgia Lawson had a tough time against the 4th seed. Ryan Storrie and Jay Clarke look to have good first round draws.

Boys R1 (L64)

William Kirkman (DOM) v Ryan James Storrie

(8/WC) Jay Clarke v Agustin Cattoretti (BOL)

Girls R1 (L64)

(4) Michaela Gordon (USA) d. Georgia Lawson 6-0 6-2

(5) Emily Arbuthnott d. Mimi Levine (USA) 6-7 6-0 7-5

R2

(5) Emily Arbuthnott v Dominique Schaefer (PER)

Just to point out that, to the best of my knowledge, this is the first time that Ryan Storrie (our 'unknown' rising star from last year) has been out of the US to play high-level matches. All part of the stepping stones in what, let's hope, might be an exciting career. Do hope he enjoys it and isn't overawed by the occasion.

And a passing shout out to the LTA, too, who I believe have selected him for a GB delegation team to play some other ITF events in a couple of months. Wish him the VERY best in his quest to make it to Wimbledon this year. Many paths lead to Rome, and all that.

Seemingly, it's very windy out there, causing problems for some. But both British boys come through:

Boys R1 (L64)

Ryan James Storrie def. William Kirkman (DOM) 6-3 3-6 6-2

(8/WC) Jay Clarke def. Agustin Cattoretti (BOL) 6-0 6-2

Boys R2 (L32)

Ryan James Storrie v (6) Catalin Mateas (USA)

(8/WC) Jay Clarke v Maxime Mora (FRA)

I can see Ryan being top junior in GB soon. He needs to pick up some decent doubles points as he has several no scorers, but will be GB no 5 (or better) when the points are added and well into the top 200.

There's no crystal ball magic there. He's most definitely on the way to being a top junior. He only came on the scene mid-2104 so he's not even done a full year in terms of points.

From all I've heard, he's also a lad with a wonderful approach to life, and the game.

It's probably posted else where but a young man who is talented and up for it and found a way to progress despite a hurdle or seven. Good to see he is getting some LTA help. Hope to see him at Wimbledon juniors in the summer.

5 star rated blue chip recruit ranked 2 in California 5 nationally ie US, probably accurately assess his potential.

More power to his elbow and good luck in the Coffee Bowl

This article is in Ryan's own thread, under General Tennis, (when he suddenly 'appeared' out of nowhere) but well worth posting again. All good stuff.

He's playing doubles with the guy he's now drawn against in the singles.

The two won their first singles match yesterday, 6-1 6-1.

Jay Clarke also won his too, 7-5 6-0, playing with a Croatian boy.

Emily A won her doubles too, but Georgia got knocked out.

Having googled Mr Storrie's next opponent, he is an interesting player, as he is one who has not overwhelmingly prioritised tennis, but has still done very well: www.scta.usta.com/Juniors/michael_genender/. Sounds rather as if he's the equivalent of someone taking assorted A levels and applying to top university programmes ... who also plays tennis. At a guess, Mr Storrie will be stronger than he.

Looks like a great doubles partner

This guy has Stanford written all over him. He's too good a tennis player if he really wants to push himself on that front and go anywhere else (if he is academic as it seems) they look at academic performance first sport second and have an interesting recruitment policy. They post details of average relative earnings of Stanford graduates over and above all the other schools who are competitive on a sporting front.

It will be interesting to see if Storrie follows the college route whether he gets into a west coast powerhouse tennis programme that are normally pick up the top American prospects as opposed to scouting the rest of the world. I can't imagine there are many British tennis UCLA or USC alumni.

Girls R3

(5) Emily Arbuthnott d. (11) Alexandra Sanford (USA) 6-2 6-1

Well, so much for my skills in prognostication! Well done to Ms Arbuthnott, and hope she does well in singles and the boys do well in doubles.

Gendender is in the class of 2015 blue chip 5 star recruit verbally committed to Stanford. McEnroe went for a year interestingly he was ranked 20 in the world when he went, I couldn't see that happening now!

Emily is also into the QF of the doubles

Both Ryan and Jay and their respective partners won their opening doubles, but lost in rnd 2
