Marray holds a grand slam doubles title and has proven pedigree therefore, which in my opinion qualified him at the time as the anchor selection for team GB doubles. The fact that Ross Hutchins among others took selection preference indicates the extent to which LTA politics holds sway over ability.
Not only is there nothing on the BBC website, the sports round up on the TV this morning didn't mention Jamie or Jonny AT ALL! Surely two British wins in one week is at least due a line or two??
Longish piece about the darts though...ironic pause...
Anyway, well done to Jonny - really chuffed for him.
Three cheers for the Sheffield Star ... a paper whose readership in this household owes its existence entirely to its consistently excellent coverage of Mr Marray. As for the BBC and others who have omitted coverage, well ... least said ...
And three times three hurrahs for Mr Marray and his partner - fabulous win! A great run ... and then beating Leander Paes (and Klaasen) at home! Lovely to see. Hope that the new year continues to bring him joy.
I really like Jonny and of course was thrilled for him winning Wimbledon.
But at no time have I considered him an 'anchor selection for team GB doubles'. There have been other very good candidates and generally I have been happy with the teams selected. I think both the current men's and women's captains are independant and pragmatic thinkers. There should be wider consideration than his having won Wimbledon doubles, tremendous though that was and of course a big factor.
Re the Ross Hutchins selection vs Italy I felt that was a real error if partly muddled thinking. I think the plan was to reintegrate him in the squad with Colin and Ross seen as a probable longer term selection - and one can debate that - with him not to be in the final 4 man team, Andy playing doubles. Andy got ill, they felt they had then to select two doubles players in case Andy couldn't play doubles, although he did in the end. The big error to me then was not having another doubles player, such as Jonny or Dom, out in Naples as extra cover to potentially play since to me Ross was just not ready. I would then have had Dom, but that was just my preferance at the time.
Anyway, again, really great start to the year for Jonny.
Thanks, for that, Steven. Interesting to see that Jonny will play alongside Sergiy Stakhovsky at the AO.
I beg to differ re The Times: my copy of the print edition has an article containing less detail about Jamie & John than the on-line version, but does mention Jonny's win in a general round-up of the weekend's results by Ron Lewis (a new name to me!):
Jamie Murray and Jonny Marray, the British former Wimbledon doubles champions, won titles yesterday with different partners. Murray, a 2007 mixed doubles champion in SW19, teamed up with John Peers, of Australia, to win the tile in Brisbane with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Alexandr Dolgopolov and Kei Nishikori. Marray, a 2012 Wimbledon men's doubles champion, won in Chennai, pairing up with Lu Yen-hsun, of Taiwan, to beat Raven Klaasen and Leander Paes in the final, 6-3, 7-6.
Thin fare, I know, but at least Jonny gets a mention.
For the record, he's risen 17 places in today's rankings to N° 58, Jamie by three to N° 38.
