What gets me is the number of wild cards issued to Foreign players I remember Cara Black getting a singles WC years ago on the basis of what?

I could say the same for a load of British players as well - if we can justify awarding wild cards to the likes of Samantha Murray, Tara Moore, Ed Corrie and a host of others then why not her (or when she was playing). I still maintain the view that in general wild cards to the main draw of all grand slam events (not just Wimbledon) should be scrapped. If you're good enough you'll either get in on merit or you'll qualify. None of this top 250, reciprocal arrangements, subjective bias nonsense that we get now. The only exceptions I would be prepared to make is for former Top 50 players whose ranking has suffered due to time out through injury/illness if the PR system does not cover them. But there you go.

The WC system will never disappear and it has its good and bad points. I cannot remember has Ed Corrie played at Wimbledon I thought he had never been in top 250 to warrant the WC!  Tara Moore sorry I disagree with you two tough draws in two years and run both girls really close I think Tara played really well

I accept that the WC system will probably never disappear - not in my lifetime anyway - and I can understand the need for it at more regular tournaments where there is perhaps a greater need for tournaments to survive and generate revenue but grand slam events are in my opinion far too important events to hand out freebies.

Ed Corrie - Got my facts wrong here and confused this with a WC to Queen's not Wimbledon

Tara Moore - Ok, so she may have played above her normal form but so what - a lot of players do from time to time. There may have been players who did not make it through qualifying that could have given Kanepi a good game on the day and Zvonereva, admittedly a former finalist and top 10 player, had practically been off the court for 18 months - so not as tougher draw as she would have been when she was fit and in her prime. My point is that she had not earned the right to be there on either occasion and should have been made to go through qualifying and would she have won three matches in a row? Very questionable at best but had she done so then of course I would be prepared to cut her a bit of slack and what has she done since? She's now ranked 358 in the world and would not even make the qualifying draw.

The same situation applied to Emily Webley-Smith who got a WC but beat a clay court player Severene Beltrame if she had not received the WC then she would not have been in the tournament. I think the last GB player to win three rounds in qualifying was Karen Cross years ago.  I don't have a problem with Tara getting a WC she was 185 IN world and qualified within the top 250 rule.  Agree her form has dipped!

I continue to fully agree with you, A131. I'm with you in spirit. Well put re Tara ( who did play well, but as you say ... )

I just can't find the energy to repeat all my whys and wherefores and argue the toss for yet another year, but yes handing out passes to compete at the elite level of Slams is the biggest just no, no for me.

A sort of step ( though not ideally enough for me, since for me for Slams it should be top ranked players full stop ) is outside top 200 ( and fit ), MD WC, just no, get up the rankings. But we just won't get all the Slams to change.

Thanks Indy and nor should you be expected to find the energy to repeat all your whys and wherefores and argue the toss for yet another year and no, unfortunately, we just won't get all the Slams to change and therein lies my frustration as you well know. Have a good weekend!

CURRENT WR 250 : 185

Assuming the normal 8 GB WCs ( MD + Q ), prior to additional ones from the Q WC play-offs, may be some interesting choices.

And Laura ( if she is fit and takes a MD WC rather than a PR entry ) and Katie Swan ( I would have thought in line for a Q WC ) may need to be factored in as well.

Was wondering when Katie was going to "resurface"

Katie is entered into 6 events that week. She's been entering tournaments for several weeks now but always withdrawing from them all. Hopefully Tuesday sees her remaining on a list.

A further update on players' minimum pre Wimbledon WC announcement points, i.e. taking out all points due to come off up to and including 15/06/15 ). Points earned this week are included.

With relatively few weeks left, clearly in general these minimum points are closing in on their actual current ranking points.

1. Heather: 941 points

2. Johanna Konta : 280

CURRENT WR 200 : 246

3. Naomi Broady : 178

CURRENT WR 250 : 178

CURRENT WR 300 : 135

4. Emily Webley-Smith 127

5. Amanda Carreras : 121

6. Katy Dunne : 111

7. Naomi Cavaday : 84 ( 14 counters )

8. Harriet Dart 82

9. Katie Boulter 65 ( 13 counters )

10. Tara Moore 62

As with the current overall rankings these 10 are well clear. I would see only a fit Laura Robson ( if not using a PR ) and Katie Swan as WC candidates ( MD and Q ) beyond these 10.

Clearly Heather will be a MD direct entry and I'd fully expect Jo to get a MD WC and I think Naomi B will too. There will be choices that will have to be made as to who gets Q WCs and who will have to visit the WC play-offs if they want one. Amanda, I read, does plan on playing the grass court season.
