RE: Ranking points so far guaranteed before Wimbledon

I tend to agree, CD.

I got the impression a big reason for the introduction of the rankings criteria was because the LTA had previously been accused of favouritism, and unfortunately the accusations appeared to have merit.

But it can be done without rankings criteria ( though rankings certainly a consideration ) if you have folk doing the job properly as distinct to the previous mob.

CD, I totally get what you are saying, ideally.  However, subjectivity is always what it is.  Whether we like it or not, with subjectivity, skewed judgement even from supposed expert is inevitable.

I would trust it more if you were part of the expert panel :) based on what I have read here about your talent scouting prowess.

Always better to give players the opportunity to achieve on merit by going along the lines of Wimdledont suggestion.

Yes, Paul, one specific criteria for this coming Wimbledon for me would be a main draw WC for any GB female tennis pro with initials EWS :)

Seriously, if she maintains decent form during the first half of this year, in particular if she pushes closer to or beyond WR 250, with the example she has been setting and her grass court ability, Em would be on my list.

Also, if they are taking past wimbledon main draw appearances into account as demonstration an ability to up your kevel and compete I say give Em the wc now :p

Emily's win over Beltrame was a long time ago and I saw that match at Wimbledon she played really well that day. Saw her in qualifying 18 months ago at Roehampton got beat first round unless she gets top 250 or higher I would say no wild card as she has had chances over the years. I think Katy Dunne and Naomi Broady have more chances of a main draw WC

Don't think Katy Dunne has the game yet for a GS main draw. Will not be doing her any favours. Let her earn her way to main draw.

Only reason I mentioned Katy is that she is still young and promising I cant see the LTA  nominating Emily for a main draw WC unless she gets a career high below 200

Not sayin that Indy I like Emily as a player if injuries had not blighted her career she could have progressed to a career high possibly inside top 200 I just cant see the LTA  awarding a main draw WC likely to go to a more promising younger player

In slightly more depth, particularly if Emily makes the top 250, which is almost back to her CH, for me she will be deserving of a MD WC for what she is achieving NOW.

Too much is made of giving PROMISING players the experience of playing Wimbledon to help them for the FUTURE. I am not convinced that this is so necessary, and if they are good enough they'll get there, more ready, a year or two further down the line. Ask Naomi Cavaday about how WCs to the young and not really ready can be a very mixed blessing, if blessing at all.

If Emily is still playing well come Wimbledon, I would have a reasonable amount of confidence that she wouldn't be fazed by a WC award and would give it her best shot.

I think Katy has a good shot if she keeps progressing, she was a little unlucky not to get one last year. As for Em its highly unlikely but I'd love to see her get a doubles WC.

Wardy/Kyle/Liam should be dead certs and then probably a couple more who are in top form. We've got a very strong group just behind those 3 who deserve serious consideration.

On the ladies side Jo/Laura are dead certs, with Naomi/Katy deserving serious consideration, and I'm sure a few more may emerge down the line (KB/KS) to name a couple. But they need to put their hands up and basically make it impossible for the Wimby board to say no.

Scottie, I think you may well be right about how the LTA will consider things. I would just disagree about such emphasis on rewarding the promising younger players as distinct to rewarding a player like Emily.

I do think that Katy Dunne has a decent MD WC chance if, as Phil says, she keeps progressing.

Last year was probably too soon, but this year, a year more mature and further up the rankings, she will no doubt be very seriously considered and that seems very reasonable to me.

For what's it worth i think part of the reason for the change is to give them flexibility not to reward players like Em (assuming she gets her ranking up anyway). We'll see.

If Jo keeps going backwards then surely she's in danger? As sad as it would be.

Will be interesting to see what they do with Cav, and equally interesting whether she'd accept a main draw place if it was offered to her.

Definitely with you on this Indiana. As I said, it's doing these players no favours at all. Even the talk of giving KS a wild card makes me cringe. What is the point?

Jo might not be going forwards, I'm going to put my thoughts on the FedCup thread in more detail, but I think she'll have to have a shocker over the next 4 months not to be selected.

Cav is the interesting one, I would say she'll need to be top 200 to merit serious consideration.
