I hope he's gone straight to see a specialist. All well and good taking diclofenac or popping ibuprofen like Smarties and playing through the pain, as many do. But if his knee undergoes a shift change for the worse, with the kind of physique he has I reckon he's asking for trouble, big-time. It's not worth messing around with a knee injury.
It's pretty pointless speculating about this since we have no idea what the problem is. A "knee injury" could be nothing more than it just feeling a bit sore and lets face it aches and pains are always worse when you are losing.
On a positive note James has entered qualifying for the Barcelona ATP 500 which starts on Sat 18th April so presumably he doesn't think that this is a serious problem.

I am really hoping James also has a go at qualifying in Madrid as I intend to be there if at all possible.

But he won't be able to play Madrid qualifying as he will be playing in semi final of Estoril, Istanbul or Munich.

Under those circumstances, I guess I could forgive him
Wardy at 103 in the provisional rankings, and a win tomorrow will bump him up to number 100. There is a slight chance that will hold, but it seems unlikely. Two wins however will see him pretty much guaranteed top 100.
There's a rather poignant & touching article cum interview with James by Alyson Rudd in today's Times which fills in a lot more of the background to Darren Tandy's cancer (of the colon - stage four ) & James' relationship with him (he apparently predicted that James would be a member of a victorious David Cup team two years ago). There's also an interesting revelation about the identity of his new coach - a couple of extracts:
These are bittersweet days for Ward. It is 79 years since Britain won the Davis Cup and the 28-year-old was an integral part of the team who fought their way to the final, but his suffering coach and friend has had two operations, a stroke and has lost weight.
"He's in trouble," Ward says. "I'm going to try to help his family. It's about trying to organise something to get it in place at the right time to try and raise some money. In Australia, everything is private and the chemo is expensive."

Ward wants to be with his mentor, but Tandy, ever dutiful, has told him to move on. Three days ago, Ward booked his first practice session with Morgan Phillips, his new coach.
