Err, yes. And this may be a sports thing with which I'm not familiar, but I would have used "credited for" rather than "accredited for" in the opening line. But the joys of a positive and informative (and free to access!) article about Mr Ward in a broadsheet - thanks for posting the link - far outweigh any other considerations. Long may it continue, and thank you, Telegraph.

The same thought occurred to me, Spectator, & I, too, would have opted for "credited for". Briggs is probably more familiar with having to seek accreditation from the powers that be to cover the event (& others) as a pen-pusher!
I wouldn't know, as I rarely read it (& then only occasional financial services- [for my work] &sport-related articles on-line). It's certainly more the kind of thing you'd expect from The Grauniad.
Given his points are very skewed to the second half of the year, I'd say that he has an excellent chance of being top 100 sometime in the next 4 to 5 months.
Counting points to defend up to and including Wimbledon : 86 from 5 counters
Counting points to defend post Wimbledon : 408 from 13 counters
Total : 494 from a full 18 counters.
WR 100 is currently on 555 points.
If James can add 147 counting points up to and including Wimbledon to the 408 that he has banked post Wimbledon, he will be on 555 points.
While of course it would be great to make the top 100 asap he really has a significant window if he can retain his form of the last half year or so. Looks a good position to be in.
40 points for any live match win in the Davis Cup next week :)
I'm sure he will play one or two grass events before Queen's (Nottingham is after).
I wonder if he will play hard court challengers in the clay court season, there's a few Mexican challengers after Miami and then a few in the far east.
Although, of course, it's just appoximate based on the current WR 100's points, it would be fitting if a further 147 points by Wimbledon got James into the top 100.
From what you're saying, it looks like a defining 'now or never' period for him, the forthcoming weeks and months leading up to Wimbledon. The opportunity to build points coming now rather than later.
Really, we shouldn't be having this kind of 'clutching at straws' type conversation where we're almost vicariously involved in willing a player(s) to improve his ranking position. The underlying facts show just how desperately poor our tennis situation is generally. I was looking at the French players this morning. The ATP singles rankings is stuffed full of their players; seven top 100 and seven more top 200. No worries in France whether Monsieur X or Y makes a few points here or there or whenever. Because if he doesn't there's always someone else close by. With us it's still a case of plus ça change where modest players turn into overnight heroes then back again.
