Poor Luke. And David too. . . . Those are two pretty horrid results . . . no way round it . . .
And, yes, Toby will have his work cut out.
Rufin was the all-singing-all-dancing wonderboy of French tennis a few years ago - got into the top 200 when only 19, I think. And then had the most horrible run of injuries. Had an op on his hip in 2010. Then other injuries. Then another op on his hip last year. It's all been really hard work and just when he's playing well, something else has gone wrong (and the hip thing is not completely put to bed).
At his best, he's a great talent, great player. But lack of matches, an understandable slight lack of confidence, worry about injury etc. have all taken their toll on his level. It's a real shame for him and hard, I think, given where he was, riding high.
(In fact, there's a lesson for Downey/Brett and anyone else who wants to channel ALL our efforts towards a couple of key players).
Dave Rice and Neuchrist have withdrawn from the doubles, which I assume is Dave's doing, as Neuchrist is in the process of playing his singles and winning.
