Week 49 - ITF ($10K) - Bogota, Colombia Clay

I was slightly surprised last week when Anna Brogan was only entered for one week and guess what. She has stayed on and has taken a wildcard;

R32: Anna Brogan WR 975 v Danna Valentina Galeano(Q) (COL) UNR   - aged 16

Anna seems to have had a stellar period recently, and so I'm a little surprised to see her not ranked nearer to 750, clay seems to really suit her game.

It's quite hard to pick up big points at 10K's unless you reach finals. She has had a good run, but has been picking up 1/2/4 points.

I'm tempted to put her in the top 20 for next year as i'm sure she will be moving away from juniors and there is plenty of scope for a ranking rise.

Yes, I agree. From the one set I saw on the stream, she seems to have a very good clay court game.

Hew 'lowly' ranking is also because, like most youngsters, she hasn't played a full season. Some tournaments here and there in the first half but not a lot. So her point tally is not a reflection of a full year.

Thanks for the feedback Paul and CD, I can see her getting into the top 500 next year, all things being equal.

I guess it'll also depend what her schedule is for next year. Unless my maths is seriously up the swanee, I think she's a junior next year too so she may prioritise junior events which would hold her senior progress up. Also, possible last year of studies ? I believe that they are part of IMG academy programme (but not 100% sure, or maybe it's not when you reach her age).

I liked her because she seemed a natural ball player. A lot of girls/women, in particular, play as though they've laboriously 'learned' their shots and then 'learned' patterns of shots etc. etc. She seemed to have good ball skills, and it's not actually that common.

 Yes it all depends on whether she plays a full schedule. I've heard from one source that she maybe underpowered physically, so clay indeed may be ideal, still though she has been a nice surprise package to follow at the end of this year.

...and breaks at the start of the second set, 6-4 *1-0

Re Anna's ranking, with her SF four points from last week still to be added in and one point so far this weeks, that's going to be at least 15 points ( hopefully more ) from 6 tournamenrs since the end of August.

15 points in running puts her level on points with Laura Deigman ( currently in a QF ) and Dasha as GB 20 / 21 / 22 ( Anna I imagine no 20 on tiebreak ), likely all inside the world top 850.

Given this and I feel pretty sure that she'll concentrate more on seniors next year the shock to me would be if she was not GB top 20 next year ( looking maybe this year ! ) and hugely further up the world rankings.

Go, Anna !
