RE: Week 46 - Australia F9 ($15,000) - Wollongong (Hard)

In answer to your question, I know what the cut-off has been in previous seasons.

FINAL: (3) Brydan Klein WR 294 v Andrew Whittington (AUS) WR 516 (CH 368 in Jan)

H2H 1-0 = Brydan won 3 & 3 in Kalgoorlie in 2011

Excellent win and with a couple of 15ks in Thailand to come, should be no issues breaking into the top 250.

Looks like things are getting back in track for Brydan

Hope so. I reserved my judgement when some were indignant about him becoming "British", but he certainly seems to have matured nicely and shown none of his early petulance recently. Good luck in the Final.

Alright Mr Pedant, what has the cut-off been in recent seasons?

If Jeff won't help, I can (don't worry, I didn't have to look all of these up today, e.g. I found 2004-2008 in a post I did here in 2008) - here are the Aus Open qualifying initial and final cuts for the last 11 years:

2014 original 263 final 286
2013 original 247 final 304
2012 original 259 final 288
2011 original 255 final 287
2010 original 285 final 350
2009 original 273 final 328
2008 original 281 final 311
2007 original 276 final 315
2006 original 279 final 295
2005 original 274 final 380
2004 original 267 final 434

As you can see, the cuts have got tighter since 2010 - before that, fewer of the eligible players tended to enter and the final cut could sometimes go out well beyond 300, but that usually meant an Aussie getting in due to a very late withdrawal after it was too late for most of the players higher up the Q Alt list to make the trip. Having said that, the last player to make the cut in 2007 (i.e. the WR 315) was Jamie Baker.

From this, it looks like low 280s should be enough to get in after withdrawals and of course, Brydan is based in AUS at this time of year, so he should be available to grab a late place if that is what it comes down to. It's beginning to look like he will get in fairly easily though, even if he doesn't make the initial cut.

It looks like Dan Smethurst could end up right on the cusp (I think he's going to be around 285 on Monday with no more points to come off this year), with a difficult decision to make about whether to risk travelling out there or not, so it's little wonder he's heading off to Meshref Futures to try to pick up some more points before the deadline.

Apart from that, those of the current GB top 5 who don't make the main draw will get into qualifying easily, Evo might scrape in but probably won't and hasn't been out anywhere near long enough to have a protected ranking and I'm not sure why Dan Cox has been playing BTs instead of trying to get in, though maybe there are financial considerations and it didn't seem worth the risk.

Edit: I meant to add that, if I remember correctly, I got most of the figures above from threads on MTF and it is possible that the final cuts sometimes went out even further due to late withdrawals that didn't become clear until the qualifying draw came out and which nobody could then be bothered to record on the relevant qualifying entry list thread.

Steven is a star, simple as. And often I am sure it's not nearly as simple as he tries to make out.

Great reply :)

Brydan reproduces the scoreline from their previous meeting in 2011 to win his 15th Futures singles title (3rd this year, also 1 Challenger singles title in 2009.

FINAL: (3) Brydan Klein WR 294 beat Andrew Whittington (AUS) WR 516 (CH 368 in Jan) by 3 & 3

That win will give him 188 points on Monday week, which should be top 260. He has 4 points still to come off this year but they should leave him in the low-mid 260s, which should easily get him into AO Q after withdrawals - he will get into the top 250 if he is does well in the 2nd Futures event here next week and must have a good chance of picking up even more points if he is off to Thailand again afterwards.

PS. Thanks Indiana, I've been called worse (much, much worse wink)

Well done Brydan. Good chance for some more points next week, at least no travelling to next tournament and starts against a wc. Woolongong is not a bad spot to spend a couple of weeks.

As always Steven you always have the answers, and answer in more depth then anyone could reasonably expect. Many thanks.
