Of course these sort of scores depend a lot on different people's standards and expectations eg. see Strictly Come Dancing with regard to the judges :)
I'd say OKish, could definitely have been better and probably would have been if better managed. A big rankings rise was to be expected and, as RJA says, at this stage it is about more than rankings and is certainly about general development. There is still big potenrial there and time on his side.
Congratulations on another win and buying a ticket to the next round. I really can't see what all the fuss is about, we have a 19 yr old ranked 200ish in the world who is progressing in a challenger event, indeed is in grave danger of getting to the final perhaps even win it if he doesn't loose his whey. He has just had a bad game and won.
Bit like the S club medally on children in need, a hit but not a great performance? (Apologises to anyone who thinks me over critical)
His rank this season is based on 16 scoring tournaments ( with a couple of 0' s from wimbledon and Miami). Merely playing challenger tennis in 2015 with 18 scoring tournaments as a mixture of QF and SF ie at his present level is going to get him close to 550 points and a final or two perhaps even a win and he will be rising well above it.
As beautifully illustrated in the predictions of Kyles performance made at the beginning of the year, Kyle has surpassed the average guesstimate and still could score more points in Japan. He is progressing well and I feel there is much more to come, ie he is in the early phase of development and smoothly transition from futures to challenger tennis this year.
Quite happy to wake up tommorw and read everyone moaning about another grubby win.
And to carry on the discussion, I'd say that the big ranking rise is pretty much acknowledged, there to be seen.
Granted, it's going to be a bit better than the average predicted rise, but looking not exceptionally so. In general, most folk basically predicted a pretty big rise as I assume they generally expected it of a very promising, talented player, who was still 18 at the start of the year. Beating an average prediction by a bit, even ignoring other matters, doesn't to me make a great season.
I would argue that it doesn't make a "very poor" season either, even including other matters. But that is a point of view put out there and there to be discussed / argued with by counterpoint if desired.
But I and quite a number of others have thought that much of Kyle's year was strangely / badly managed and some areas of his game have not developed as hoped. Sorry to be a bit repetitive about this, but it is a significant shared view and I don't think generally just pointing to his ranking rise really negates it or makes it go away.
No chance of me staying up to watch Kyle tonight. Midnight here and the doubles is still going on. And then there is another singles before Kyle, so unless "Ernie" activates the superchargers on his Milkfloat, it is going to be 2am or later here before Kyle even gets on court.
In fact, the early risers in the UK have probably got more chance of seeing Kyle play. If Millman v Chung goes to 3 sets, it could be 6am UK time before Kyle even starts.
Wake up everyone, Kyle needs your support! He has just lost the 1st set 6-4. It is 6.30 GMT, not that early for us! Lucky BiS and pals didn't make the effort to stay up!
I made the school boy error of believing the broadcasrt score (on the stream and Live score) It is now 1 set all, Kyle, won the 2nd 6-2. There is a score board underneath the umpire's chair. Here we go!
