RE: the curveball thread

stagger wrote:

As one of the arcade greats, curveball deserves a thread and some competition worthy of it. Thus, I throw down my gauntlet to any worthy warriors. At the moment, the mighty Montana Doug is the undisputed king, but I humbly challenge his respectable level 8-er and intend to kick his arse by the morrow. The fabled level nine is my holy grail, and rumour has it that it is an evil, bloodstained, godless place. Here, I guide thee; Levels one, two and three are very slow and you should be able to ace your opponent 90% of the time. To do this, simply circle your mouse around the ball in the direction you want it to travel, while you left click (once). Level four, the ball will be travelling a little faster, but you should be able to keep the rallies to a mimimum (the loger the rallies, the more chance of you losing the point -and a life -and you need as many players as possible for level 8) with some good serving and some rudimentary slices (or 'curves'). The need to finish a level quickly is important because the bonus (bottom right) diminishes over time. In curveball, points lead to glory and fame (and wenches). You will notice that, while your 'lives' are presented by small silver discs in the top right corner, your opponent starts of with three red ones in the top left. Once you win a point, one of his discs will dissapear. You win a set (or a 'level') by eliminating all his discs. You begin with four lives. Level five. Use this time to build yourself up into 'the zone' by some longer rallying (it's impossible to avoid by now because your fancy serving will yield only more fancy returns and it is important to let yourself get 'warmed up' into each point. Being flashy from the first stroke is not advised in curveball post level 5). From here, the play is much quicker, and when you have a ball richocheting off four walls toward you at 100mph, it is sometimes difficult to get into position. Level five is a Tim Henman aged 30. Level six. You should not have lost any lives before now (like I said, you will need them). But here is where I almost always lose my first man. The action is more frantic now, but you should be seeing the ball well and developing your instinctive intuition. By now, 90 of your routine shots will come back at you. to win a point from here on, you will need to be creative. Wide angles and deep slices can beat him, but simple groundstrokes will almost always be punished. Level seven is difficult, but not unwinnable without further casualties. Just hang in there and take it one point at a time. You will need them for the next set, in which you play the Roger Federer of curveball. Level eight. You have maybe 2 or 3 hits from your serve to get you into play, but from then on you will be barraged by an omnipotent arsenal of slices, passing shots and powerful groundstrokes as he fires into each corner. You will crash and burn and lose many men here. All you can do is hang on...just hang on and hope that god will save you and lead you to the promised land of; Level nine. We know little about it. Rumour has it, a glorious and brave warrior slew the mighty demon many moons ago. He calls to us... I challenge thee.-- Edited by stagger at 08:53, 2006-02-19

And Stagger....I loved this....I really did...but how come you didn't comment on level 10?  Also....the level that always does me in is level six....I have no idea why I find it so tough...but it often takes two lives off me and then level seven and eight let me off without taking a life...that bloody level six is horrible...what it does which I hate is that I think I have hit a winner and relax and level six gets there and returns it with venom....lol

level 10? you mean there IS a level 10? I'm not even sure that level 9 actually exists, damned if I've ever seen it.

Well done for beating my score, I thought I'd never get past 350,000...however, I seem to have reached 640,000, opps

And Montana, I resent the implication that I cheated at Simon Says, I didn't, it's just I had quite an easy beginning (about 6 of one colour to start) and so was able to fix that in my memory making it easier in the latter stages of the game.

Poor Niall, he must be quite gutted, having finally received the divine assistance needed to reach the top spot but Bethan then steps up a gear and not only beats his score but annilates it. Doug is the Roger Federer of curveball and Bethan is the equivalent of an on-form Serena Williams at Tetris.

Congrats to Bethan though, that score is absolutely amazing. I think it might be the highest ever achieved on tetris on the internet.

I sympathize with Niall, I am pursueing my own quest for arcade glory at curveball against Montana's finest !! My latest high score of 322560 would have been no1 about 1 month ago, but Doug keeps pushing the bar higher and higher, setting better scores almost daily so I'm not even on the top 10 table yet.

To stagger: Level 9 does exist, I've taken one life off it, it's very similar to level 8 but the ball has even more curve in the air and to win a rally it takes much, much longer. None of the levels trouble me until lv 7 and I only usually drop at most 1 life there. Level 8 is a bit temperamental, sometimes I can completely thrash him quite quickly but at other times he's virtually unbeatable, you just can't find a way past him.

I have actually no idea how to play the simon says game, can someone give me any instructions ?

Basically you have four colours (each with a particular sound but I play with the sound turned off). The computer makes a sequence with them, and you have to repeat it afterwards. It begins with only one colour, then you click that colour and win the point. Then two are illuminated by the computer and you copy, thus winning another point. It gets harder as you go on because you have more to remember.

Hope that gives you an idea of how to play, it's really just a memory game.

No worries, I wasn't really insulted. I'm not quite sure how I got that score to be honest, am almost certain I could never do it again so no one is allowed to pass me! Anyways, most of your high scores are amazing to me, i guess its just what games different people are good at

And now Niall's beaten my tetris score quite comprehensively I'm going to have to work really hard now to get back at the top of one of the tables if only to keep up the female pride on this board!

goddamit montana whats your secret? i can ace him 100% of the time from L1-3 and 90% of the time on L4-5. L6 is no problem and i usually finish L7 with all my men. but then L8 really f*cks me up and i crash time after time. i think its my cordless mouse. im going to buy a sh*tty conventional mouse tomorrow, then we'll see who's the boss eh?? i hate curveball. hate it i tell you. cant even get my name on the scoreboard anymore.
