RE: Week 45 - ITF ($10K) - Sousse, Tunisia - Hard

They have - the women's QF that was due on not before 11.30 local time has been played and the second match on that court has just gone to a 3rd set. Fran's was also due to be first on court but not before 12.30 local time but still hasn't started - maybe her court is waterlogged. It's supposed to be a sunny day there today so hopefully she will get on at some point or she is already on court but the scoring gadget on that court has broken down.

Fran still taking those first steps back after a long lay off, and winning matches immediately. But, not today.

QF: Francesca STEPHENSON (GBR) 911 lost to Anna Klasen (GER) [3] 553 1-6 4-6

Fran has been back for quite a while, indeed the top 25 table shows 18 tournaments in the year to date.

I had maybe expected rather quicker progress, but I have to admit I have no real sense of the difficulties she's had and it was certainly some multiple injury she suffered.

Good to see her making progress and hears to sugnificant further progress and a trouble free 2015.

I'm not sure Fran was that good a player before the injury, having seen her at Wrexham a while back, I would probably say a 600-800 player was her level.

If she commits and works hard who knows where she can end up, but from what I saw she would struggle to make any serious money out of tennis.

Paulisi, Fran's first appearance at Wrexham appears to be in 2010 md against Sania Mirza (aged 16, winning the doubles with TM) , then in 2011 md against Marta Sirotkina going down 46, 46, then in 2013 where she qualified and first round against Anna Bogdan (competing then with shoulder injury).

Whilst you are definitely entitled to your opinion (as we all are) to suggest that Fran (or any other player) isn't working hard or committing to her tennis seems to based on....well nothing! I sincerely doubt that training with Alan Jones and Jo Durrie is anything other than hard work and pretty sure that they demand commitment (especially when you consider that when Fran started training with Alan and Jo she could not even move quarter court due to ankle). Prior to Fran's leg/ankle injury she had already been hit with a further 12 months of injury and previous to this saw her career high at 518 competing and winning matches against girls with higher rankings than this both in juniors and women's events.

Just a thought!

It's all about opinions, I think the match was against Anna Smith and it was based on one match.

I'd love Fran to prove me wrong. It's a long time sine I've seen her play.

PS - I wasn't accusing her of not working hard or not committing to tennis.

Seeing a player in action can of course be very revealing. To base overmuch on seeing them once may also be very dangerous. We all know how variable some players can be, indeed how was Fran feeling that particular day ?

I rather think it is difficult to get to WR 518 at the age of 18 without really having something about you in at least the ability to go a fair bit higher.

Hence, my possibly unfair expectations for now. But if she can get fully fit, confident again and back to where she was, it will be interesting to see how far she can progress.

A well.

When i saw Fran in junior Wimbledon a couple of years ago I thought she was a solid player if nothing spectacular but then she had a great transition to seniors and as said getting to 518 at 18 doesn't seem like a fluke. Let's hope for a run of injury free months and see her get even higher
