RE: Week 45 - Challenger ($50,000) - Traralgon 2, Australia (Hard)

I have just checked the last 4 years' Aus Open main draw cuts and they are a bit more demanding than I remembered. Initial / final cuts were as follows:

2014 - 102 / 105
2013 - 102 / 107
2012 - 100 / 108
2011 - 102 / 105

So it is very doubtful that James has already done enough but if he can win tonight, I would expect him to get in, at least after withdrawals.

If Mr Ward has pulled out of Helsinki, is this his last opportunity this year to gain points?

The Milkman has just taken out Luke Saville 1&2, which probably puts some context on Kyle's match yesterday and shows how well he played to win 7 games. Millman is definitely playing Top 100 tennis at the moment and should Wardy make the final he will be a tough obstacle to the milestone which is on all our minds.

But first of all, Wardy has to make the final. So now it is time for the main event of the evening. Yes. It's Wardy time. VAMOS.

I doubt I'll manage to stay up until the end of Wardy's match but it was good of the milkman to finish his round early!

He is not down for any of the following week's Challengers, so I think so.

A hold for Mitchell in the 1st game and then a couple of big forehand winners (one aided by a dodgy line call) and Wardy finds himself 0-40. He's having none of that though and fights back well to hold.

Now it's Wardy's turn to force a BP at 30-40 as Mitchell's serve and volley ends up in the net. But a Wardy backhand ends up in the tramlines at the end of a long rally and Mitchell fights on for a hold of his own.

Wardy serve under pressure again with 3 deuces as Mitchell mixes up some booming forehands with a couple of drop shots winners. No BPs though and Wardy stands firm to hold.

2-2*

A real mixture of good and bad from both players so far and nothing really to choose between them. Another tight game goes to deuce but Mitchell seals it with an ace. Wardy needs to test out the Mitchell backhand a bit more.

A couple of big serves and a backhand winner help Wardy to a comfortable hold to 15.

This time Mitchell holds to love. A lot of errors from both players and not many long rallies so far.

Wardy holds to 30. Longest rally was about 4 shots.

One super backhand cross court winner from Wardy but several errors as well. Mitchell holds to 15.

The Milkman will be licking the cream off his lips if he is watching this one so far.

Ripping forehand winner from Mitchell to open the next game but then fails to get a single ball in court. Wardy hits 3 service winners and an ace.

Can't tell you much about the next game other than WARDY BREAKS. My internet is suddenly on go slow and the live feed is impossible to watch. The sound is 3 shots ahead of the video. All I know is that after 2 deuces, Wardy forced the BP and Mitchell served up a DF.

*6-5
