Wow, I forgot that we won that many !!! I'm definately hoping for 100+ medals. How many did we win in kuala lumpur in 1998?
Bad news, Paula Radcliffe has withdrawn from the team with a foot injury. That's 1 less gold medal now Is anyone else planning to turn night into day for a week and watch it ?
Of course I'm going to watch the commonwealths! (the athletics at least!)
Bad news about paula - hopefully she can recover soon and is back at her best for the rest of 2006!
After that, action is from midnight to 12.00 GMT with medals being mainly won in the morning. BBC will cover all the action and on the website and on interactive there will be 5 video streams of events.
Swimming update: The Thorpedo has withdrawn which is good news for British record holder Simon Burnett who will be in with a chance in the 100m and 200m and 400m
Is anyone else watching the first action in the Commonwealth Games ?
Great start for the Brits in swimming:
200m freestyle heats:
Caitlin McClatchey qualified winning her heat. She broke the Scottish record and was extremely impressive showing her 400m strength in the latter stages to get past the Australian girl and dip under 2 minutes.
Joanna Jackson also looked good in finishing 2nd in her heat.
Mel Marshall had a tough heat with the Aussie favourite Libby Lenton also in it but Mel came extremely close to an upset and qualified in 2nd place. Lenton started off very fast, possibly too fast but Marshall got closer and closer and possibly could have taken 1st place but slowed down in the last 15m.
Final is at 8.00am tomorrow morning, great chances of at least 1 medal.
In rugby sevens, Scotland thrashed Niue Island, while Wales are getting a heavy beating from New Zealand 14-0 down at present
England's Liam Tancock confirmed his status as the favourite for this race by smashing the commonwealth record just set by Matt Clay a few heats earlier. Tancock clocked 25.26 which is extremely fast and also he slowed down considerably after about 40m otherwise he might have had a shot at the world record.
David Davies won - very impressive and comfortable. Davies is the 1500m big favourite but feels that the 400m is important for his speed in the early stages of the 1500m. With Thorpe and Hackett having gone out this race is very open and Davies could get a medal.
heat 2: Rob Renwick came 2nd
heat 3: David Carry, the favourite for the gold medal came 2nd, Alaistar Hunter came 4th just missing the final.
The Brits have all been extremely impressive so far especially the Scots who all seem extremely well prepared.
womens 200m individual medlay:
heat 1: Scotland's Hannah Miley in her first major championships was very impressive in finishing 2nd, she hasmade the final.
heat 2: Terri Dunning came 2nd in her 2nd race of the morning, led after 50m but a slower backstroke leg allowed the Australian to overtake her. Wales' Julie Gould came 3rd. Both Dunning and Gould have made the final.
