Commonwealth Games

25 days to go !!!

The Commonwealth Games is always good for national pride, it always brings sackfuls of medals and a load of optimism for the next Olympics.

Which events are you most looking forward to ?

Which athletes will you be most looking out for ?

Oh! Athletics! MY EVENT!

My interest lies with Miss Kajsa Bergqvist  in the high jump (WORLD RECORD HOLDER - 2.08m!!!)....she'll be 30 in 2012 olympics...the stadium is only gonna be like 20 mins away from my house i have to go see her in actions at least once! BUT unfortunately the swedes don't compete

British Athletics seems to be in the doldrums at the moment although we always seem to do OK in the indoor season because most of our athletes are pretty slight and are not as muscular as other competitiors and cannot transfer success to the outdoor events.

I think Nicola sanders might sneak a medal in the womens 400m hurdles, Gardner to medal and possibly MLF in the 100m (though Obikwelu will probably win). Hopefully the combination of Paula and Jo will take gold medals in the women's 10000m and 5000m (optimistic i know but Pavey has the talent and we all no Radcliffe is brilliant). Benjamin WILL win gold in the mens 400m..i hope...and then lead the team to 4x400 success. silver possibly in the 4x100 maybe even gold as the Americans aren't there. ALso Nathan douglas to medal in the triple jump and maybe even a long jump bronze for tomlinson.

Thats all i can think of off the top of my head - watching Jo Ankier in the steeplechase should be fun even though she's not too good..this is her btw:

Who knew she's into tennis?

Whoops got a bit carried away...

I pretty much agree with you, except for one thing - doesn`t Obikwelu compete for Portugal now?

Used to watch loads of atletics but not so much since Andy has arrived.  Nicola Sanders comes from the same town as me so I hope she can get a medal.

hey im an 800/1500m runner as well! Used to be an out an out 800m runenr but now 1500 is my specialist event and sometimes 3k! Whats yer PB? I dipped under 4 mins a few times last season and won the London junior event! my pb is 3.56 but have run slightly faster in training. Injured now though

There aren't many pro athletes from my club but there are a few from the local area. Phillips Idowu comes from round these parts (the triple jumper who should've medalled at the Olympics!)

Did you see the athletics today? It was from Birmingham Indoors(might well be wrong on that) I think. Rob Tobin won the 400m, and they worked out that Nicola Sanders` indoor PB is actually faster than Tonique Williams- Darling`s (Olympic champion)!

Yeh it was the Birmingham indoor Grand Prix. WAs looking forward to seeing Johnson vs Sotherton (was joking on the bbc board that they should sort out their differences with a good old catfight - ratings for the beeb would go through the roof ). Rob T has been impressive in recent weeks but i rate Benjamin highly and think that he'd cope with the pressure. The Sanders stat is impressive but im just pleased to see Tonique back in action

Is Tim Benjamin still injured? He has to be one of the favourites for the 400m gold if he`s fully fit but he`s had so many injury problems.

RE: the voting, if GB were to get only 10-20 medals that would be a disaster!! Last time they got more than 160 including 50+ golds (although there was home advantage)!!!!

Yes - he hasn't managed to recover from his last injury - groin strain? He withdrew from the Welsh team a few weeks ago - big blow for us Welshies! But it'll be fin watching all the home nations compete - I love athletics :)

Wow, I forgot that we won that many !!! I'm definately hoping for 100+ medals. How many did we win in kuala lumpur in 1998.

I'm looking forward to the athletics and the badminton. In Badminton, Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson are the favourites for the gold and if they're at their best there's no better mixed doubles pair in the world. Anthony Clark and Robert Blair in the men's doubles are also outside shots at a medal.

Incidentally, there's been a selection controversy in table tennis as the new national champion hasn't been selected as he didn't attend a training camp for some reason. There've been lots of complaints about his ommission.

It's a real blow that Tim Benjamin is missing out, that would have been his best chance yet for an international medal. It's sad that Iwan Thomas has been yet again thwarted by injury, I don't think he'd have been in contention for a medal but he was the guy who got me interested in athletics in 1998 with those stunning performances. Robert Tobin has got a great medal chance on recent form, does anyone know if Daniel Caines is competing or is he going for the world indoors ?

There've been a whole host of British victories in a warm-up event this weekend.

Christian Malcolm won the 200m, Christian came 2nd and Mark Lewis-Francis came 5th in the 100m [this was the most disappointing performance, there was a headwind but the times were extremely slow, Lewis-Francis clocked 10.80 - he won't get past rd1 with a time like that]

Christine Ohurogu won the women's 400m

Nick Mc Cormack had a surprise victory in the men's 1500m

James McIlroy is another who appears to have hit form at just the right time, he secured his 2nd warm-up victory and is one of the big favourites to take gold in the men's 800m.

Goldie Sayers won the women's javelin, Susan Scott won the women's 800m, Phillips Idowu won the triple jump [hopefully he can finally produce his best in an championships], there was a British 1-2 in the men's 110m hurdles with Scotland's Chris Baillie just edging England's Andy Turner.

Nicola Sanders and Lee McConnell were 2nd and 3rd in the women's 400m hurdles.
I really hope that Nicola gets a medal this time round as in Manchester she had virtually secured a bronze medal but fell at the final hurdle.
