Naomi should win fairly comfortably, but JoKo has a really tough opponent and it won't be easy.

Not looking good. Don't think she's won a point on serve yet and missed 3 break points in the last game.

She took an injury break between sets.

Was holding serve pretty comfortably in the second but doing nothing on return other than one game where she had a break point at 3-2*.

Missed a game point at *5-5. Saved one break point, lost the next and retired.

Really odd. Still struggling with the wrist?

Naomi starting imminently - chance to be GB No. 2 with a few wins.

I was just looking at that. If Naomi qualifies she will get 18 points, net gain of 10 which would put her one point behind Jo-Ko. So she would have to win the first round proper as well, but unless she wins 5 matches then it is likely she would be only be GB no. 2 for 1 week as she will start losing lots of points from her 2 Lagos tournaments last year.

Possibly struggling with the wrist.....but retiring with an opponent about to serve for the match is one of the more frustrating and unfortunate things that often happens on tour. Can things really have only got to the point of retiring 4 points before the end? Really?

Struggling with the tennis is probably more accurate given Jo's last few outings. At this rarefied level, it's rare that good players like Jo lose form with basic technical flaws aplenty that have emerged or got significantly worse.....usually it's mental, confidence, tactical, or gamestyle related. Didn't see this match, but the ones I have seen have been littered with UEs on Jo's forehand that were 100% technical.

Back to the drawing board I hope.

Thanks for the detail   I admit I hadn't looked in to it very closely, just saw that it was a possibility.

Naomi has won the first set, 6-3 2-2*

Naomi wins 6-3 6-3

Nice to see Naomi get a win - they've been remarkably thin on the ground these last few months.

And Victoria is no pushover - another junior moving up to adult tennis, who's below Dodin but a bit above Moinard (see Greek thread).

I do agree, strange time to retire and always seems ungracious regardless of the circumstances. To be far to Jo things could have been getting progressively worse to the point where she could barely even hold her racquet any longer, so perhaps fairer to reserve judgement.

Ms Konta has always seemed a good sport, so I would agree that reserving judgement is a good idea.
