You do that. I'm off to sleep, crossing my fingers that Murray doesn't do the doubles. Sorry Aukland, but I guess most of the top players don't really do singles and doubles because of the schedule. If Murray does play doubles, I doubt that he'll have too much of a chance of beating A-Rod, but maybe he will learn then to stick to singles, at least for now.

Just realised that I'm actually sounding a bit harsh here. Didn't mean it to sound that harsh.

I have a feeling that if a player pulls out of the doubles they can not play singles either! But I may be wrong

I might/might not stay up for the doubles - I was 100% certain that I would about 15 min ago but I'm beginning to start seeing double
I'll do my best to stay up.

Night Xenon, don't worry, you didn't come across harsh to me. Hopefully with around 3 hours to mull it over, Andy will decide to withdraw, James has got some great points to boost his ranking already with an ATP quarter-final.

If he does play, it will be an interesting test of the fitness work he put in during the off-season !!

I'm off for a quick nap, but intending to be back for the doubles.

Just wondered if anyone here has actually played doubles after playing singles earlier in the day. How much does the doubles actually take out of you?

Being positive, it was only three sets, not five, and the new doubles format is designed to be quicker.

I am downloading the ATP rulebook now. It is multi-Mbyte and 286 pages so may take a while.

I think he should play if he's feeling alright. He's not played too much this week and although the match tonight was a three setter it wasn't that long. I guess he would just look at it as a practice session with nothing really to lose. I mean he'd put an hour in on the practice court tonight anyway, so he may as well play a match for that I think.

BEEB report............

Andy Murray produced another battling display to reach the semi-finals of the SAP Open in San Jose.

The 18-year-old from Dunblane lost the first set to Swede Robin Soderling and was a break down in the second.

But he broke back and then out-battled the Swede to level at one set apiece before breaking early in the decider.

Soderling levelled at 4-4 but Murray broke him again and served out a courageous 4-6 7-5 6-4 victory to earn a semi-final with Andy Roddick.

The American top seed beat Bjorn Phau of Germany 6-3 6-2 in the last of the day's quarter-finals.

You don't want to be unpopular on tour, but when you are on the court you have to do what you have to do to win

Andy Murray

"I started off pretty badly," Murray said after reaching his second ATP tour semi-final.

"I had a late-night match on Thursday and I didn't get to sleep until about 11 o'clock. I returned pretty well in the last two sets."

Murray threw his racket four times in the match and was given a code violation after appearing to swear at chair umpire Norm Chryst after losing the first set.

"I was trying to get myself going because I started the match so sloppy," said Murray.

"It obviously worked. I was a little frustrated at the four or five bad calls on big points."

Soderling approached Chryst to complain about Murray's behaviour, and the Briton added: "You don't want to be unpopular on tour, but when you are on the court you have to do what you have to do to win."

Third seed Lleyton Hewitt also reached the last four with a 7-6 6-2 victory over fellow Australian Wayne Arthurs.

Hewitt hurt his left ankle during a second-round defeat at last month's Australian Open, but believes he is starting to regain his form.

"I feel like this was a step in the right direction," he said. "The first two matches I could feel it. Today I barely felt it."

Hewitt's opponent in the semi-finals will be American Vince Spadea, who beat Belgian Kristof Vliegen 6-1 2-6 6-3.
