RE: Week 41 - ATP Masters 1000 - Shanghai, China (Hard) - AM

It was very nearly 6 of the top 10. Federer saved 5 MPs in his victory over Mayer.

And the big winner in all this is Berdych, who is now the highest rank left in his draw (Isner is the next highest...).

So, short of a big upset, that's another of the race places all but sewn up. That leaves Raonic, Murray, Ferrer and Dimitrov battling over the 8th place.

The ATP site reckons Cilic is still in the race... does he not then qualify as a result of that slam?

Only one Slam winner outside the top 7 qualifies for the WTF and since Wawrinka has not yet secured a place in the top 7 it is mathematically possible, albeit unlikely, for one of them not to make it.

Ummm......what is it about being in a winning position? Now 0-3 and head seemingly all over the place.

Not sure what happened but I awoke to 6-2 and finished getting ready to 1-6 *1-3. I'm no theoretical physicist but I'm pretty sure that Andy's WTF fight is about to take a serious dive down the kazi if he doesn't turn this around.

Think that's a bit harsh.  It was a stunning performance in the 1st set.  During the 1st part of this year, I felt Andy was struggling physically as he got deep in a match or tournament.  Today, his movement and the way he still went after drop shots etc made me think that physically he's back to normal.  Now, though he seems to get mentally tired half way through a match. He's played fewer matches than usual this year but not by that much, so it can't really be put down to lack of matches. Maybe lack of matches at this standard?

Sounds like 2nd and 3rd were a drubbing. And after such a brilliant start. What happened?

That's - dismaying. He will be back to 10th in the race now, and I don't think it would be a good idea to try to fit in another tournament, it seems like it's more a problem with stamina than anything else, and overplaying won't help that. Mind you I didn't see any of the match - I had to take the Other Half for an Xray. 90 minutes wait + 30 minutes waiting in the second waiting room and having the Xray, + travelling time - that's my morning gone. I don't know whether or not to watch the match on catch-up - I should think it would only depress me.

Looks like we're just going to have to wait and see what 2015 brings.

Didn't see the match so maybe Andy was putting a generous spin on things, or maybe he was right and David was just a wall and unbeatable?

"He barely missed a ball for about a set and a half," said Murray. "I couldn't find a way around him. He played just great tennis, especially the last set and a half.

"[At] the beginning of the second set I still had a couple of opportunities there right at the beginning. But after that, I've got to give it to him, he played fantastically well and deserved to win."
