RE: Week 39 - Challenger ($50,000) - Napa, USA (Hard)

I saw the whole match yesterday and as I keep saying for a man with no weapons he is excellent. In the first few games he'd hit 6 aces including a couple of 130mph efforts. He is excellent at varying the height of his forehand which ginepri found hard to deal with, although it has to be said ginepri did look incredibly lethargic, especially in the second set after he'd chucked a horrid game to give Liam the first.

If Liam plays like that tomorrow or Thursday there's absolutely no reason why he can't win - I just hope it's at a more sociable hour

Liam said he had done a lot of work on his serve.

His guile around the court is his major weapon. I didn't notice his serve at Wrexham, but maybe the courts were a little slow as neither Harry or Marcus' serve stood out and both are renowned for biggish serves.

He has doubles tonight - hopeful on a TV court at a reasonable hour.

I've already mentioned this before, but apart from the serve which was massive, his speed around the court really stoodout.

If someone had asked me about Liam's movement before last night's match I would have described it as just a little above average, but that is clearly something thats improved alot after watching last night, and as we know defence is huge in the men's game.

If Ginepri did tank the second set then we probably need to keep a sense of perspective here and not get too excited by just one match, but I think Liam has a great chance of a decent career. After all you don't get to 2 junior slam finals by accident. He's had a lot to deal with personally and injury-wise but hopefully now things are starting to blossom for him.

Liam and partner took the first set on the tie break before play was stopped.

Liam is second on centre, so should be streamed at a reasonable hour.

Kuz gifts Liam the break back with a really dreadful error to end a horror game. Liam's good play won one of the 4 points. 4-4

Twice Liam has set point. One saved by a big serve, the other after a long rally, Liam a bit tentative. Real chance wasted 5-5

Broady powers in some big serves 6-5*

Like to see Liam attack the net when he has Kuz hitting defensive backhands.

A (rare) aggressive backhand earns Liam a mini break *2-1
He then follows my (poor) advice, only to hit a rubbish volley into the net 2-2
Another mini break comes and then departs as Liam's backhand is wide

*5-6 Liam is tentative. Kuz willing to go on the attack
6-6 Kuz has an opening but nets a bh cc
7-6 Big serve from Broady
8-6 Liam drawn forward by short Kuz forehand, Kuz nets the pass

Well done Liam. I'm very impressed. A different player from the lad I saw play at Tipton 2 yrs ago. Great to see.

Enjoying this match. Two players with some guile around court, rather than power.

Liam very solid and mixing up the ground shots, moving Alex round and changing pace and spin. Just needs to get that first serve going.

Regardless of the result today, if anybody still had any doubts that Liam was ready for this level, those doubts must surely have been erased.

Let's hope Liam can go on to win the match.

I wouldn't like to pick a winner now, but Liam can be proud of this performance up to now.

Liam breaks back for *3-4. Both players struggling to hold in this set.
