Week 39 - Portugal F7 ($10,000) - Castelo Branco (Hard)

Alex, Luke, Toby and Jwh all out having a Brit-fest in Portugal (as well as a huge Israeli contingent, for some reason . . )

An excellent win for Chris Reynolds:

QR2: Christopher Reynolds def. (8) Rafael Mazon Hernandez (ESP) WR 1259 (CH 660 Aug 2011) 6-3 6-2

FQR: Christopher Reynolds v (9) Viktor Durasovic (NOR) WR 1281 age 17

NB the main draw isn't out yet but in the doubles, Josh and Luke are seeded two, playing together. and Chris has a wildcard entry with a Portuguese player but they've drawn the top seeds.

Unlike the Swedish 15k where all the Brits (bar Joe) seem to have nice first round draws, I don't think the gods have really smiled here:

R1: (1) Alex Ward WR 380 v Romain Barbosa (POR) WR 851 (CH 768 a month ago)

R1: Toby Martin WR 700 v Antoine Escoffier (FRA) WR 918 (CH 470 Dec. 2012) -

R1: Josh Ward-Hibbert WR 783 v (3) Jaime Pulgar Garcia (ESP) WR 412 (CH 398 a month ago)

R1: (4) Luke Bambridge WR 515 v Calvin Hemery (FRA) WR 677 (CH 614 Nov 13) - 19 year-old who lacks consistency/application but has bucket loads of talent

as feared, Hemery is proving a bit of a handful for Luke: 6-4 in the first set to the French guy (he's a bit up and down though, so not over yet . . )

R1: (4) Luke Bambridge WR 515 lost to Calvin Hemery (FRA) WR 677 (CH 614 Nov 13) 6-4 -6-4

Calvin is one of the top handful of under-21s currently based at the NTC equivalent place in Paris. His results have never been quite as great as talent dictated, partly due to problems settling in Paris ?, but the authorities believe in him
He comes from Guadeloupe and is often touted as the 'New Monfils' and there's quite a lot of Gael in him - similar 'cool', charismatic style of play - brilliant when on-form but sometimes completely 'absent'

In the doubles (the lower one has been posted before):

1st Round

Ivan ARENAS-GUALDA (ESP) / Jaime PULGAR-GARCIA (ESP) [1] def. Christopher REYNOLDS (GBR) / Miguel SEMEDO (POR) 7-5 6-0

Luke BAMBRIDGE (GBR) / Joshua WARD-HIBBERT (GBR) [2] def. Diogo LOURENCO (POR) / Alex MOLINA (ESP) 6-1 6-1

That move away from NTC really seems to be doing JWH some good:

R1: Josh Ward-Hibbert WR 783 beat (3) Jaime Pulgar Garcia (ESP) WR 412 (CH 398 a month ago) by 4 & 3

However, Alex is a break down in the decider of his match

Excellent win for Josh. I think he has a decent coaching set up now and a good group of guys to work with.

Alex 3-2 up final set, Toby started well 4-0 up.

That means 6 singles matches involving Brits have finished so far today and they have won all of them
