I've quite enjoyed Kyle's year, personally. From Vercelli I knew that Kyle had Challenger potential and he's lived up to it, mostly. He's going to stutter and I'm in no way suggesting that Kyle couldn't have had a much better year (in my opinion, he very much could have) but he's beat the likes of Kavcic, Gerasimov, Bedene and Brown; as nice as it would have been if Kyle had shown some breakthrough moments, I think Kyle salvaged his 2014 with post-Wimbledon Challengers and now has a chance to go for more points.

Well done, the Anglo-Irish pairing! The Indian pairing should be tough - seem quite underranked at present.

18 year old Nishioka went through the entire week and won the Shanghai CH tournament. Well done him. Now ranked around 160-170.

18 year old Hyeon Chung went through the entire week and won last week's Bangkok CH tournament. Now ranked around 180.

It can be done, and it IS being done. Kokkinakis hasn't won anything significant yet but does seem to throw in the odd win against big players with his WCs. 18. Ranked around 180. Coric exactly the same, ranked about 175, but only 17. Zverev similar but an even younger 17, ranked around 150. And Krygios, 18, of the scale at around 50 in the rankings - clearly different level, but frankly he started winning CH tournaments a while ago.

We were also talking about Gianluigi Quinzi of Italy as a junior to watch in the same breath as some of these other young men, another 18 year old. Only ranked about 300 but won 3 ITFs in 3 weeks in May, which is pretty spectacular, before a few ATP/CH losses and then injuring himself.

First and foremost, I think it's a fairly exciting time for young talented men's players, which is great for all of us. My point with Kyle is that I believe the LTA felt he was up there in the mix with some of these other young men as world prospects, and probably streets ahead of the likes of Nishioka and Chung. The receipt of a stack of WCs for ATP tournaments all over the world earlier this year signals to me that many other tournament directors felt exactly the same way. I think Kyle's progress in relative terms had been very good indeed even upto early 2014.....interestingly Kyle thrashed Nishioka 3 and 0 when they last played earlier this year to win a $10k, and did something similar last year against him too.

My question mark is simply that Kyle appears to have hit his first "mini wall" in terms of progression around the 220-250 mark at 19, whereas some of these others haven't hit their's yet at 17 or 18 and are higher ranked and still rising. The wall will arrive for all of them.

Fully accept [and hope] that in the fullness of time this might turn out to be a non-issue, but I am a little surprised and disappointed that 2014 hasn't gone slightly better to date for Kyle - because I believe he really DOES have a touch of magic dust about him!

Just for the record, Kyle lost the doubles semi in straight sets.

Yang, who beat Kyle so impressively lost in 3 in the next round.

I do agree with Korriban, but stalling in itself isnt an issue as long as Kyle starts to climb again soon. Of course if the climb doesnt start you have to get a little concerned.

I would say though that Bouchard on the girls side is a good example of why you shouldnt worry if progress feels relatively slow. Laura was streaks ahead of her before Euginie's game clicked and she rocketed into the top 10, so Im not worried about Kyle lagging behind his contemporaries for now.
