Week 36 - Great Britain F15 ($15,000) - London-Cumberland (Hard)

Qualifying draw is out

http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2014/3382/qs.pdf

Quite a few drop outs, but still plenty of GB players

Main draw - Cox, Willis, Klein, Milton, Bambridge, Pauffley, Coupland, Farquharson, Burton, Martin, Carpenter, Marsalek, Ward Hibbert, Meehan, Oakley, Aswat, Clayton

Looks like Thornton-Brown, Bettles, Sapwell are in via wildcards and one other

Good opportunity for Marcus to gain badly needed singles  points if not to slip back into the top 400 .

Marcus has a great chance to pick up big points. The winner should come out of the top 5 as the draw has weakened significantly. Wrexham might be a bit tougher as the draw is much stronger.

I know that there are geographic issues with simply calling this tournament Cumberland, but that is its quite common appendage and London is a big place.

So for possible future reference, "London Cumberland" ?

 Exactly A1.

Because this is the way the LTA are funding Marcus. (And others)

the LTA are saying: here you go, we've laid on the tournament and you win this and we'll give you £ 2,300 (prize money plus top-up).

Not saying that the LTA have got it completely right (!) but it is funding. It's up to the players to 'win' it.

Great weather predicted for the rest of the week should be a treat. Should be the called the Erith Open with lots of SE London school kids going to watch ie the kids who turn out in Burgess Park every week etc... the state kids don't go back for a couple more days that would be 2k well spent by the LTA . Any idea how big the venue is?

But no it's in West Hampstead. The venues are a major problem in terms of engaging the wider population, sticking some top quality courts in 4 parks in SE and NE London capable of hosting a futures tournament in for example Ilford, Dagenham, erith and Lewisham and running a British Tour events there in summer holidays every year would perhaps make a dent in the demographics that truly hold back tennis development in the UK.

The MD Doubles is out:

Marcus/Lewis are top seeds

JWH and Freddie N are second seeds

both have a bye through round one.

The others are pretty much the usual suspects, though includes Joe Cooper and Sam Holt - possible wildcard in the singles ?

Interesting to see they are playing evening matches, given it is outdoor. Final Qualifiers start at 4pm.

The OoP says it's all been moved indoors.

They started playing matches at the NTC at about 4. I don't see why they couldn't have at least done the draw by now and put some sort of OoP together.
