Hopefully points breakdowns are nowhere in their minds just now.

It's enough to bother about trying to win a US Open qualifying match !

Of course by 'right now' I didn't mean...'right now'. biggrin

Pity re Evo, seems an OK, if of course not winning, performance.

The consolidation of last year's points should have been happening from the end of last year.

Well done to James.

Indeed! It has no doubt been mentioned before, but unless he does well in a Challenger during the USO, Dan is almost certain to drop outside the top 250

The next event he has entered is the Istanbul challenger which is the week after the US Open. He will have another two weeks of entries after that where he will still have a top 200 ranking.

Round-up time - 3 Brits are Daaan and out (& igmc) but James fights on. Dan S didn't really manage to take advantage of a relatively kind draw, to put it mildly

QR1: Dan Cox WR 260 lost to (q3) Filip Krajinovic (SRB) WR 109 (= CH) by 3 & 3
QR1: Dan Smethurst WR 256 lost to Konstantin Kravchuk (RUS) WR 223 (CH 126 in 2010) by 1 & 2
QR1: (q15) James Ward WR 131 beat Aldin Setkic (BIH) WR 247 (CH 217 in 2013) by 2 & 2
QR1: Dan Evans WR 176 lost to (q16) Jimmy Wang (TPE) WR 132 (CH 85 in 2006) by 4-6 7-6(9) 6-2

QR2: (q15) James Ward WR 131 v Vincent Millot (FRA) WR 164 (CH 147 in 2011)
(winner plays (q31) Fucsovics or Albot)

H2H 1-0 - James beat Millot 7-6(4) 4-2 ret. in Lexington last month

Disappointing that Smethurst didn't at the very least make it competitive.

As for Evans. Were it not for his getting into Zagreb as a LL and then winning 3 main draw matches his post US Open ranking would be around 450.

I can see Evans chucking it to be honest. He doesn't have the heart for it I fear.

It's difficult to speak about whether he has the heart for things or not when we have heard from various sources that he's struggling with an injury. Certainly, though, it would be a disheartening time - especially given that he held match point and what was at stake. The other person I feel for is Mr Cox; given a slightly better draw, I think he would have had an excellent chance of getting through at least one round. Hard to tell what happened with Mr Smethurst (one expected more), but this is all new to him. Next time ....

And well done to Mr Ward. Just the kind of solid performance against a lower-ranked opponent that one wants. He's on a good court again tomorrow - I was trying to work out why he kept getting put on good courts and then remembered that he is, of course, known (infamous?) to US tennis audiences for his Davis Cup exploits.

As a side note, while looking at the court assignments, noticed that Courts 17 and 11 (two of the other good courts) are evidently "Juniors" courts today - with one exception, every match features at least one player who could also be in the junior draw. Indeed, had they been less focused on Americans, they could have filled those courts with juniors. The highlighted "elders" are all on 5 and 13. And the "granddads" (to use CD's terminology) are stuck on courts 7 and 14 ... including Michael Russell in a match against fellow veteran Steve Darcis where the players' combined age is 66! Thanks for pointing out Oscar Hernandez, CD: I hadn't realised he'd retired after back surgery didn't work out (aargh! perish the thought!) Have adopted him as an honorary Brit for the tournament (well, he is an underdog ....)

I feel Evo is easily good enough and young enough to get back up there and then some. It's a long way back though, and whether he has the application and dedication is another matter. Some clarity about the injury situation would also be useful in order to make an accurate judgment.
