RE: Week 34 - US Open Men's Qualifying - Hard

... but now Beck has 0-40 as Ram serves for the match!

Beck wins the tiebreak 7-5 so James is the 4th highest-ranked FQR loser and will definitely be in the random draw for a LL place, should one become available

Thank you, Mr Beck. Sorry for Mr Ward: a disappointing way to lose, but these things happen - and he's still defended all his points ... and has so much scope for improvement in his ranking over the coming months. All the best to him.

If anyone saw the match, more interested to know how the first set went ??? James really off ??? Other guy playing well ?

Shame. That was as good a chance as you'll get. But he's has harder matches that he's won and even easier ones he's lost - it aint straightforward (for anyone, and maybe for him more than most).

Really disappointed. Thought this was his moment to step up, and especially after his exploits at Roland garros I didn't think he'd have any problems. Sounds like he was off his game almost throughout.

Massive missed opportunity.

At least the draw is versus Simon, so in all probability it's only 19 points missed out on.

It strikes me that rather more than the usual number of top qualifying seeds got through, so James sort of lives on...

I really did think that he would win last night.

Of the qualifiers, there are:

2 teenagers (Coric and Nishioka, age 17 and 18)
2 over 30s (Chiudinelli and Darcis, age 32 and 30)

Average age: 25.1 years

3 Japanese
3 Germans
2 Belgians

I see Bedene went out too yesterday.

Germany and Japan take six of the 16 places, Belgium an honourable runner-up with two, otherwise all the usual suspects with the exception of France. Not a single player into main draw despite seven or eight participants.

I'm not sure where Wardy came out in the draw but you would have to be an idiot to pull out now and not collect your first round losers cheque unless your one of the top players.

He's 2nd in line for a LL spot apparently, so as you say, very unlikely
