I hate to be a bit of a downer but it was a poor match littered with unforced errors.
That said Wardy did very well to come back from what was looking like a match that was drifting away from him.
If he can be a bit more solid in the next round, he could win.
I didn't see the match so I can't comment, but I have no problem with our guys winning ugly. The stats suggest he won quite easily, saving 1 of the 2 BPs he faced and converting on 4 of the 13 he generated. His 1st serve stats weren't good, down at just 45%. He won 56% of the points played overall.
A good serving performance tomorrow will give him a good pay day. If the odds are good, I may even place a small wager, I think he has a good chance
80 unforced errors between them, hence the reasoning behind my post. I thought Miles MacLagan had the analysis spot on after the match (he is an excellent pundit by the way) talked about a need for him to utilise his backhand and improve at the net. Both him and Leif Shiras agreed that mentally he is much better nowadays, which I agree with.
I suppose the conditions were tough today, mind.
Rola and Bennetau are *3-3 in the decider. I think Ward would rather play Rola...
I think Benneteau will be a step too far. However I think the belief is now there that James can topple much higher ranked players and there is plenty of opportunities to push that ranking higher.
If it's not this week, then hopefully he can carry on this form in the US Open qualifiers and make the main draw. Will he be seeded in qualifiers?

Unlike Wimbledon (where the men's Q draw takes place on Sunday so they have to use the previous week's rankings), I think seedings for US Open qualifying will be based on next Monday's rankings, in which case, yes - he'll be in the bottom half of the Q seeds if he loses to Benneteau, the top half if he beats him.

The point is, Ward is fighting, evidently so if you watched the match. He's fought hard through qualies and now this against a much higher ranked player. Compare his effort yesterday with his tame loss against Youzhny at Wimbledon where it seemed he only turned up to collect his annuity.
