PS any chance we can make the threads six weeks in advance of the tournaments? To cover ATP/WTA. Naomi has made the main draw in Quebec the week after the US Open.

I can, but it gets a bit messy with ITF events much later.
Having had the pleasure of chatting at length with Beechy today, I can confirm that Kyle's decision not to enter qualies for the US Open was purely a strategic one (a decision Beechy thinks was the correct one) and that Kyle will next show up on the on the Asian Challenger tour towards the end of the month.

I noticed he and Oli were down for the Thailand $50k in Week 35 and did figure that the USO had to be strategic. Hopefully it works out!
I still can't get my head round suggestions that it made sense for experience for Kyle to take these first half of the year WCs and it making sense to miss the experience of US Open qualifiers.
But my bigger issue was with the first half schedule, and at least there does appear to be thought and planning into the US Open alternative. All the best to Kyle and Oli.
I think BIS post reinforces my impression that Kyle has been well advised strategically for a long time, his strengths weaknesses and emerging needs all considered with the broad view of developing a top 30 tennis player. There also appears to be a lot of good will from others with relatively little to gain in facilitating his development, the time spent in Miami, the amicable coaching split and early Davis cup exposure. I don't think there are any goals set re ranking points just merely progression in terms of performance against higher quality established players year on year with a view to matching his own aspiration of being a top ten player. I am certain Oli would have got exactly the same opportunities if he had shown the same temperament, application and willingness to play ball. I am convinced there are a number of coaches within the LTA who do know exactly what they are doing and we have some talented juniors, however an ability to play the game does not make the best players it is the ability to practice to play the game on top of that that allows maturation from an elite junior to a top touring tennis professional.
I am amazed the player in question is still playing. He had plenty of advantages when younger e.g. Buster Mottram as private coach, but it looks fairly clear now he is not going to make a living from tennis and his parents are not super rich.
(His father, Willie, was racquets world champion for several years in the 1970s.)
