RE: Week 32 - Comerica Bank Challenger - Cal Open ($100,000) - Aptos, CA (hard)

I assume there is the element of relatively rewarding quality over quantity with the 18 counters rule ( 16 for women ). Some people think they should go further.

18 is still quite a lot, but I guess you could get some Duracell Bunny players, playing just about every week and adding quite a lot more lower scores on top of their best 18. It is very questionable whether these extra tournaments and scores indicate that they are any better player.

I like having a maximum number of counters.

Oh, any particular reason for that rule?

I'm guessing it's for several reasons - ranking on a like by like basis rather than who can play the most tournaments. Protect players from over playing and getting injured and not to penalise players too much who have been injured.

Anyone know why Kukushkin is here and not in Toronto?

Seems strange for a player ranked so highly to be in a challenger when there's a bigger tournamnent about

^ On paper it's an easier 100 points than having to go through Masters qualies and win a match in the main draw.

While clearly at times may be a consideration, in the case of competing in USO qualifiers vs alternatives how "easier" an alternative may be for earning points wouldn't be near the top of my priorities.

Oops, in a muddle, thought it was further discussion on Kyle playing challengers rather than USO qualifiers.

Then I wondered why I had just posted about that in the Aptos thread. I am rather more interested in Kyle than Kukushkin :)

In the bits I've seen, he hasn't been playing too badly, so I assume Kuku has just been a bit too good.

Lovely forehand dtl winner on the stretch on a fairly crucial point at *3-5 30-30

... then an absolutely terrible 3rd shot halfway up the net to get pegged back to deuce, and now break/set point

Ward was the better player in the 1st half of the set IMO

He's also doing well at the start of the 2nd - 3-6 *2-1 though deuce on his own serve now
