RE: Week 32 - Comerica Bank Challenger - Cal Open ($100,000) - Aptos, CA (hard)

I had it full screen on my laptop, it was at least 6 inches wide. One of the worst calls I've ever seen. He did well to keep it together

It was out, but six inches is pushing it a little. More like an inch

That horrendous miss on break point by Gomez might just save Wardy.

Big win in the circumstances. He won on a let cord... 3-6 6-3 7-5

Great win in the circumstances, seems like a match Wardy would typically lose 12 months ago! Well done Dino, now a no pressure match vs Kukushkin

The good thing for James is that he now has more than 18 counters and no so much to defend until Feb. So with a few more solid results could climb higher in the rankings.

Great result, congratulations to Wardy who despite being a gooner is an absolute pleasure to follow, even when he slacked off before RG it only enhanced his reputation in my eyes, who cannot forgive a man scribing off to watch the cup final.

Sorry he was probably skiving off. There is lots of scribing off on here, sounds slightly dubious and apologises to those that enjoy this guilty pleasure for making posting sound so sordid.

As paulisi said, James has a full 18 ranking counters before this week, which is good to see.

The short term effect though is that James has to do more to make any real rankings gain, i.e. with his 18th counter being 6, the 8 he has earned here for a R1 win only adds 2 to his overall rankings total.

Still good to get a win and these points are in the bag for hopefully not too many rainy days. And you have to win R1s for a shot at R2 ( and there will be easier R2s than this week ).

I don't understand this 18th counter malarkey, what's the deal?

No matter how many tournaments you play, only your Top 18 results will count towards your ranking.  Wardy's current 18th best score is 6.  So if (as is the case here already) he has a better result, then the 6 pointer would then be considered his 19th best score and hence would not count towards his ranking.

So as things stand here (prior to R2) Wardy has scored 8 points, which will replace the 6 pointer in his Top 18 events, giving him a net gain of 2 points (so far).

Oh, any particular reason for that rule?

go James, great little run he's on, though I hope he doesn't run out of steam ahead of the US qualies. Presume he'll be taking it easy next week though.

He's got very few points to defend over the next 6 months so expecting him to push on to a new career high, and hopefully towards the top 100.

There are no challengers in America next week. James is on the alts list for the Masters tournament, but is unlikely to get in.
