RE: Week 32 - Comerica Bank Challenger - Cal Open ($100,000) - Aptos, CA (hard)

Tiebreak - Grigelis broke early and as in the set itself, Richard broke back for *4-5 then got a set point at 6-5* - saved

Believe it or not, Richard is about to serve for the match. Almost glad I still had work to do now!

... and Richard takes out Grigelis from a set and a break down and a mini-break down in the 2nd set tiebreak - what a win!

QR2: Richard Gabb WR 439 beat (q1) Laurynas Grigelis (LTU) WR 238 (CH 183 in 2012) by 4-6 7-6(6) 6-3

FQR: Richard Gabb WR 439 v (q7) Sanam Singh (IND) WR 400 (CH 293 in 2012)

L32: James Ward WR 157 v Emilio Gómez (ECU) WR 241 (CH 215 last month)

Singh was of course the player Richard upset in 3 sets in Lexington qualifying a couple of weeks ago.

Quite remarkable. Well done. And utterly absurd that he receives neither any points nor any prize money for such a win.

He does, at least, get £300 from the Bonus Top-Up scheme.

But, wow, brilliant result - and backs up his recent good run at Granby and good wins at Lexington.

just goes to show, like Dan Smethurst last year - if you keep plugging away at challengers your tennis will improve and the results will come. Well done Gabb, starting to make a few ripples on the other side of the pond

Well done, Richard, on a very fine win. clapping.gif  He's having another crack at qualifying for the doubles MD, too:

QR1:  (qWC) Connor Farren & Alexios Halebian (USA/USA) CR 2171 (1146+1025) vs (q2) Richard Gabb & Bumpei Sato (JPN) CR 797 (444+353)

The q1s, Emilio Gómez & Zhang Ze (CR 672), await in the FQR if the boys win that one &, if they qualify, the second seeds, Kevin King & Divij Sharan (CR 229 bleh ).

Excellent win, but Mr. Gabb's form has been very up and down this year.

Well, until Granby, the calendar year was very consistent.

Seven counter futures events, with 1 SF, 2 QFs and 4 L16s.

Granby obviously gave that a little boost. Which does show that you don't have to nailing futures to have some good success in challengers.

He does, however, have a lot of points (over half his yearly total) to defend this autumn, which is when he had a good run last year (and, as you say, sill in the last 12 months points-wise).

It may be in another thread and if so sorry to ask but how does the bonus top up scheme work? Re the extra £300 for winning. Thanks

James not seeded this week, should win opening round, but then the top seed likely in round 2.
