Well that wasn't pretty, but it is a WIN !
Smitkova looks like one for the future, and not a matchup that suits Hev IMO. Even with Hev's new aggressive style, this was a match very much on her opponent's racket. Smitkova pressed the self destruct button at the end of the 1st set and Hev should have won 6-4 6-1, but alas it all went pete tong during the 2nd set.
It was very nervy throughout, and when Hev looked tired at the end of the 3rd set I feared the worst, but she stepped up to break and take the match.
The forehand which has been looking so good this year was having a very off day, backhand was good, serve solid.
Not sure what we'll get next round but it should be much better, fingers crossed.
Even if she gets no further, Hev should break back into top 50 - currently 47 live with realistically Coco, Flipkins and Rybarikova with a chance to go past.
I sense folk were in some ways almost more impressed with Heather's early season form and she had many impressive wins.
But over the last 3 months, even with some disappointments, she has still played very well at times, against generally higher ranked players and in bigger tournamenrs, and she's certainly been racking up ranking points. Including 90 to date here, that's 605 from 5 counting tournaments from mid May in Prague, Roland Garros, Eastbourne, Wimbledon and Montreal. 605 total ranking points would get you in the too 100. Extrapolate that period to a full year of 16 counters and that's quite well within the too 30.
She might be quite good once she further develops confidence in her more attacking style !

How many points are you crediting Hev with? I may well have missed something but I make it:

... which would still leave her just outside the top 50, around 51-52.
Not sure where paulisi is getting his information, but this site http://live-tennis.eu/wta-live-ranking is saying 47 also. To me your calculation looks spot on so we'll see.

Interesting - looks like we agree on the points total. I looked at TBE's list on tennisforum, where 1040 points is enough for WR 51 and since it would have been enough for WR 52 in this week's list, assumed it was correct. Checking for discrepancies between the TF list and the one at that link you just posted, the first two mistakes I found were in the former so maybe Hev is in-running WR 47 after all - that would be good

Very tough ask for Heather but Cibulkova did make the final at the AO after beating her, and has gone R3, R3 in the FO and at Wimbledon. Hard court is seemingly her favourite surface so hopefully she won't be near her AO levels and Hev can come out swinging.

I've just looked at that live ranking page again and I've seen the 1040 total on the left hand side of the page, I was looking at the 1085 ( next points column ) Oh dear ! So maybe 47 is right as you say, even if it is now 49 after wins for Vesnina/CocoVan today.
