Sloppy FH error from Ward, who seems frustrated.

0-1*

Ah pity.

Still, good form by James recently, particularly in the previous round.

The problem has generally been that James has often shown really good form for a period, but that tends to be two or three tournaments at most, and he can then show fairly inexplicably relatively poor form.

Until he can finally achieve a longer sustained run of form he will not make the top 100, and on balance I tend to doubt that he ever will be top 100. I really hope that I am wrong though.

I agree with that and I think that in any case he would struggle to remain within the top 100 once entered, there are people like Thiem, Goffin, Bolelli to name a few... and new ones that are comin like Zverev, Coric, I don't see much chances for Ward. Hope to be wrong...hmm

Not wanting to be contrary but, yes, obviously James Ward needs a longer, sustained run of form if he's to break into the top 100. The question is will he have one. I think he's not far off and, as such, probability is that it will come, as he's in his prime now. (ALthough, as said before, and in agreement with gatto, I don't think he'll have a sudden sea change and become a solid top 70 player).

And I wouldn't worry about the new guys coming up - yes, there's a whole load of new guns who will stake their claim (and most certainly be better than James). But there's a lot of older guys and also-rans who are just waiting to drop out - there's plenty of space . . .

I definitely think he has the game to do it, I just wish he could bring more sustained intensity on court. I think against good opponents he gives them too much and fails to impose himself properly.

Against Dustov, for example, he did well to fight back and level the set, yet went 3-0 down in the TB straight away through lack of intensity. If he had more of a Cox/Edmund type approach where he looked really hungry for every point and made his opponents sweat a bit more, he would be top 100 fairly reasonably

By all means be contrary, just as I was being to your earlier post. Just we disagree.

I do hope James does make the top 100 or at the very least really has a very good shot at it.
