Bah! Still 12 points is equitable to be winning a 10k so all in all not a bad excursion to DC

She's in the dubs with Nicola Slater so it could still get better, regardless.

Ouch. Really thought it would be a lot closer.

R1: RAE/SMITH CR 221 (111+110) v ABANDA(CAN)/ROGERS(USA) CR 711 (208+503) - Winners to play the top seeds BLACK/MIRZA WR 15
R1: SLATER/WEBLEYSMITH CR 461 (252+209) v KUWATA(JPN)/NARA(JPN) 1094 (229+865) - Winners would probably play number 3 seeds KING/TOWNSEND 183

Edited to show full combined rankings as published on the WTA site today.

Joss and Anna's draw looked good until I saw their 2nd round matchup, if I remember correctly the second seeds aren't that strong, in fact the combined rankings of the 2nd seeds on lower are well in xs of 100.

Well, if they get that far, I don't think that playing Black/Mirza is a bad thing. When you are just starting out and have to play two of the greatest doubles players on the Tour, you don't really have much to lose. And it's good to get a sense of what they're like. A pair of first-round wins, at the least, would be a lovely thing.

Not so much a breeze, more a force five hurricane.

That's the little sister!! 14yo tennis-playing Hurricane Black. Seriously.....

From the few snippets seems to have been a combination of Tornado playing well and Em struggling in the heat. Given Tornado is one of the best players in the world, Emily is exactly the sort of player she should be comfortably disposing off if she is planning on making a move, so whilst it would have been nice for a fairytale run I don't think there can be any complaints.

Will be interesting to see if the Brits can take advantage of the doubles draws this week.

I think both doubles pairs would be happy enough to pick up a WTA win and the prize money and points associated. Anything extra would be a bonus.

On the face of it, both have got good draws.

R1:  Jos Rae & Anna Smith CR 221 (111+110) defeated Françoise Abanda & Shelby Rogers (CAN/USA) CR 711 (208+503) by 2 & 4

The girls came back from a break down in the second set.  smile

*****

And another twist on the learning curve in the next round, no doubt:

QF:  (1) Cara Black & Sania Mirza (ZIM/IND) CR 15 (10+5) vs Jos Rae & Anna Smith CR 221 (111+110)

It's beginning to look like my estimate for Hev's BST start time may be about right after all, even though I placed her in Vancouver which is 3 hours behind! Berrer v Sock started at about 23.15 BST and there is still Paire v Karlovic to come after that before Hev gets on court.

In other words, it seems unlikely that she'll get on before about 02.30 BST.

Em and Nik lose the set 62

Broken from game points up and also missed a deuce point to break. So should have been a closer set.

Hopefully they can push a bit harder in the second although I think a comeback is probably not on the cards.

Oh dear:

R1:  Hiroko Kuwata & Kurumi Nara (JPN/JPN) CR 1094 (229+865) defeated Nicola Slater & Emily Webley-Smith CR 461 (252+209) by 2 & 1 bleh

Wonder what went wrong there...  Looks as though the girls were never really in it!  disbelief
