Boys & Girls: U18 European Junior Championships, Klosters, Switzerland, clay - Grade B1 (Week 30)

No sign of the draw yet, but Joel Cannell, Joshua Sapwell, Emily Arbuthnott and Freya Christie were originally nominated. Unfortunately Josh has had to withdraw, having been unable to recover from the illness which hospitalised him before the Frinton futures, though he expects to be part of the U18 European Summer Cup team the following week

Joel joins Freya in round 3, but will do well to advance any further, with a seeded Spaniard next up on clay (assuming the weather allows outdoor play tomorrow - most matches so far have been indoors)

Boys R2

Joel Cannell (GBR) d. Joel Popov (FIN) 6-2 7-5

R3

(8) Pedro Martinez Portero (ESP) v Joel Cannell (GBR)

There are big points for this tournament as an area championship, so good chance for Freya and Joel to jump up the rankings

Joel put up a good fight but, as predicted by David, wasn't quite strong enough:

R3: Pedro MARTINEZ PORTERO (ESP) [8] 6-3 3-6 6-3 Joel CANNELL (GBR)

Freya lost more easily:

R3: Paula BADOSA GIBERT (ESP) [5] 6-3 6-1 Freya CHRISTIE (GBR)

So Spain 2, GB 0 :(

The top seed, ITF junior world number 4, Munar from Spain, has been knocked out by the junior WR 65, Connolly from France.

The junior number 8, Tatlot, ATP 540, has also been defeated, by a Swedish player who is obviously not playing juniors any more (Junior WR 1803, CH 55, ATP WR 864)

In the other semi, more established players Halys (FRA) and Saffiulin (RUS), 5th and 10th respectively, will play off for the other place in the final.

In the girls event both Spaniards (who are top 500 WTA) made the semis along with Zidansek (Slovenia) and Komardina (Russia)

In the doubles Freya and Emily continue to demonstrate their forte. The Spaniards are in the other half of the draw, and have only dropped a handful of games or so in reaching the semis.

Girls Doubles SF

Ottomano/Teichmann (SUI) v (7) Arbuthnott/Christie (GBR)

Emily and Freya confirming their prowess at doubles, stopping a Spaniard clean sweep (they have both singles finalists)smile

Only the second British female pairing to come away with a title here. The previous ones were Anne Hobbs and ? Cooper in 1976, the first year of the event (Lee Childs won the singles in 2000, and doubles with James Nelson)

Just to wrap up the singles, it's a tale of two countries.

In the girls, Spain was dominant, with both winner and finalist:

Girls Final: Sara SORRIBES TORMO (ESP) 6-4 6-1 Paula BADOSA GIBERT (ESP) [5]

In the boys, it was France who took both trophies:

Boys Final :Quentin HALYS (FRA) [2] 6-4 7-5 Corentin DENOLLY (FRA)

(and also the boys doubles, with Halys and Tatlot).
