Week 30 - WTA ($250K) - Baku, Azerbaijan Hard

I make the totals for the top 3 Brits:

Heather: 682 after reaching the Final, 782 if she wins the title

- based on 503 points at the start of the week + 180 or 280 - 1 (11th best)

Anna: 665 after making the SFs, 683 if she reaches the Final, 715 if she wins the title

- based on 665 points at the start of the week, 11th best score of 30 and 29 / 48 / 80 points for SFs/RU/WIN

Joss: 660 after making the SFs, 679 if she reaches the Final, 711 if she wins the title

- based on 660 points at the start of the week, 11th best score of 29 and 29 / 48 / 80 points for SFs/RU/WIN

So Hev will be GB no. 1 next Monday if she wins the title *or* if Anna and Joss go out in the semis, but Anna will pip her by 1 point if she makes the Lexington final (more if she wins the title) *and* Hev fails to win the Baku title.

It's easy to make mistakes without full Best 11 lists so If anyone is feeling kind enough to check this before I think about tweeting it, I'd be very grateful!

Yes, that looks all hunky dory, Steven, assuming Heather's 11th best is 1 point, which paulisi has already indicated.

I had been thinking that Anna would be level with Joss after this week, but being a 25K her 34 points earned this week last year will not come off until a week on Monday. From then on, they will be level.

Woops, sorry, missed a mistook.

Joss will be on 711 points if they win the title. As I indicated, Anna will still have a 34 counter so would maintain a 4 point gap over Joss ( as you correctly showed for them reaching the final ).

Not sure I'm the biggest fan of top singles players playing doubles. Before the onset of GF Hev played a lot of doubles. It is also impacting her prep for next week in Washington, but anyway good luck for the final.

Thanks. I copied down the Anna line for Joss then forgot to change the last figure.

So, with Anna and Joss reaching their final as well, we have in running :

1 Anna 683
2 Heather 682
3 Joss 679

As Steven indicated, Heather will of course go clear GB number 1 ( in the next rankings anyway ) if she and her partner win their final.

Well done to Ms Watson. Agreed that at one level, this means she has a very, very quick turnaround before heading for the US hardcourts. But at the same time, suspect that being in a final of a WTA tournament is a nice boost to the confidence level. And there are lots of top women who play doubles pretty consistently, for whom doing so doesn't seem to be a barrier.

Good point, Spectator - as witness the fact that Francesca Schiavone (WR 75, but has been as high as N° 4 & was a winner at RG in 2010) & Stefanie Vögele (WR 72) will be slugging it out with the third seeds, Raluca Olaru & Shahar Peer, for a place on the other side of the net in the final.  Peer's current singles ranking is 90, while Olaru is perhaps the exception to the rule in that her current singles ranking is only 877, but 88 in doubles, so is arguably a specialist doubles player these days. wink

Well done Hev and thanks to paulsi, steven and others for the ponts info.
I'm so glad to see Hev getting back to where she was, and now hopefully beyond.

Final:  Alexandra Panova (RUS) & Heather Watson CR 220 (83+137) vs (3) Raluca Olaru & Shahar Peer (ROU/ISR) CR 199 (88+111)

They're not that far apart in the combined rankings...   Olaru & Peer went through after Schiavone & Vögele retired at 3-4 to their opponents.

Very pleased for Hev.  Nothing like a title to make a player feel positive about their tennis.
