RE: Week 30 - WTA ($250K) - Baku, Azerbaijan Hard

Heather usually has fast reactions and is quick around the court but she seemed slower than usual today as if she wasn't seeing the ball. Maybe the wind made her less confident about what the ball would do.

Diego seemed a good guy to have as coach. It would seem a pity / rather worrying if they have split up, but maybe some other reason for the other guy being there.

Pity about today's performance, but not in itself to me a greatly worrying performance and result, given what Heather's tennis has generally been like of late.

I'd be more concerned about her coaching situation.

If Diego went home to South America for a break sometime after Wimbledon then Baku is a long, long way to go for 1 tournament only to then fly to the US so maybe they decided it was simply not worth it and they are going to meet up in the USA next week ??

I was going to say the same thing, could be any number of reasons why Diego wasn't there. Be interested to know who was standing in this week though.

Hev was one of the favourites to win this week so whether that provided extra pressure who knows, also there's bound to be a bit of rust after being out of action for 4 weeks.

Better luck for Hev (& partner) in the doubles:

R1:  Alexandra Panova (RUS) & Heather Watson CR 220 (83+137) defeated Bojana Jovanovski & Danka Kovinic (SRB/MNE) CR 635 (275+360) by 6-4 5-7 [11-9]

*****

QF:  Kateryna Bondarenko & Nicole Melichar (UKR/USA) CR 599 (423+176) vs Alexandra Panova (RUS) & Heather Watson CR 220 (83+137)

Their opponents took out the fourth seeds, Glushko & Klemenschits (CR 132), in first round, so are not to be underestimated!

Especially as Bondarenko is a former top class doubles player who is on the comeback trail, either from injury, getting married or having a kid.

How many points will she get for this? She is around 160 behind.

110pts to replace a 1pts, but has 70pts to defend at Washington next week

That's a terrific result!  jump.gif  I see I somehow managed to omit any mention of the top seeds' combined ranking when I posted the line-up yesterday & that is 122 (54+68).

According to my draw sheet, it is the beaten semi-finalists who collect 110 points.  By my reckoning, Hev, having actually reached the final, is guaranteed 180! wink
