On the face of it, they could hardly have hoped for a better draw in the quarter-final!

QF:  (4) James Cluskey (IRL) & Darren Walsh CR 500 (178+322) vs Elias Ymer & Anton Zaitcev (SWE/RUS) CR 2058 (1403+655)

The boys capture the second set by 6-4 to take the match into an MTB.

Darren and james save two break-back points and take the second set.

Into a MTB . . .

They were just postponing the inevitable, however:

QF:  Elias Ymer & Anton Zaitcev (SWE/RUS) CR 2058 (1403+655) defeated (4) James Cluskey (IRL) & Darren Walsh CR 500 (178+322) by 7-6(8) 4-6 [10-5]  bleh

Meanwhile, Sean & Ruben are faring better against the Belges on the centre court:  they took the first set by 6-2.

Easy peasy! smile

QF:  (3) Ruben Gonzales (PHI) & Sean Thornley CR 421 (201+220) defeated Germain Gigounon & David Goffin (BEL/BEL) UNR by 2 & 3

*****

SF:  (3) Ruben Gonzales (PHI) & Sean Thornley CR 421 (201+220) vs Damir Dzumhur & Adam Pavlasek (BIH/CZE) CR 736 (530+406)

The eastern European disposed of the Dutch second seeds, van der Duim & Westerhof, by 3 & 5 in the first round...

Looks like they've been handed a w/o and are in the final

They certainly have!  Jammy buggers! biggrin

SF:  (3) Ruben Gonzales (PHI) & Sean Thornley CR 421 (201+220) "defeated" Damir Dzumhur & Adam Pavlasek (BIH/CZE) CR 736 (530+406) by a walkover (only the second in three rounds! disbelief )

Any bit of good fortune that Mr Thornley gets is fine by me: he doesn't seem to receive that many.

I trust, dear Spectator, that you didn't think I was begrudging Mr Thornley his two big slices of good fortune this week? wink  I certainly agree that he deserves his little windfall.  48 guaranteed ranking points must represent a tidy return for a still largely Futures-based player.  Not so sure about the miserly 750 euros in prize money, but better that than a kick up the rear end, I suppose...

Do you think the LTA would still pay their bonus to a player if they gain it via a w/o?

They should do - not the player's fault if the opponent(s) withdraw, and there's nothing to say they wouldn't have beaten them anyway.

I agree TMH. Basically precisely the same reasoning as it is correct that they have at least 48 ranking points.

First set of final is as close as can be. 6-6 and into a tie break. Each pair has had a few break points but so far, none taken.

Sean and partner drop the 1st set 7-5 in the breaker.

Points won on serves are very similar but for Sean and Ruben, only 38% of 1st serves are going in!

I agree too.

And the LTA bonus grid does not say 'SF win = £650'

It says 'RU = £650'

So, if you're the runner-up, you're the runner-up - it doesn't specify how you got there.

(NB not saying that they're going to be runners-up, of course - just lost that first set but all still possible - BUT at least that's a guaranteed runners-up place and, on the fact of it, a decent top-up cheque)
