Very disappointing scoreline. 2nd round matches in ATP events don't come much better than this.
I agree RJA - beating two players ranked outside the top 400 (one not even in the top 1000) and an injured Matthew Ebden is nothing to write home about.
Was anyone claiming it was anything to write home about ? Just maybe a decent tournament choice and then good break in R1.
But, yes, pity that James couldn't produce more of a challenge in R2, but as I said earlier his form remains very variable. If only he could find some way to play nearer his best much more consistently. Far too much of a mixture of encouraging level performances and pretty much the opposite.

Without fully knowing how players go about choosing their tournaments which I know to some extent will depend upon their ranking or how late they can decide or what influences it (money, ranking points etc etc), I am just wondering whether the view given by some that this was a 'great choice of tournament' or 'decent choice of tournament' as you put it is a bit of a euphemism for 'I am looking for some easy pickings' or 'I am looking for the easiest route possible to get from point A to point B'. At the same time I suppose a lot of other players would be allowed to do this so it is not as if Ward has done anything wrong - just thought he might have gone for one of the Challenger events but that's his choice.
I'm guessing James will be chasing points with the Lexington points due to come off soon also not played on hard courts for a while so getting some court time, before the US hard court challengers.
As I just said in the WC thread, but related to A131's post above, to me there is nothing wrong with choosing some tournaments for better ranking points potential, as long as still generally choosing tournaments that develop their game.
James is one player, who has to me never generally steered clear of decent challenger events, so if he chose this event for points reasons, particularly with a lot of points to defend in the near future, seems perfectly fair enough to me. He has never struck me as a player generally "looking for the easiest route possible to get from point A to point B".
