Wardy is a confidence player, so hopefully this win will kickstart his hardcourt season. Even if he did it the hard way...

Sometimes the scrappy wins do the most for a player.

of course the 6pts for this round and possible 12pts for qualifying will be a big help in protecting his ranking.

Yes. Both James and Dan E have got a lot of points to defend over the next 3 months.

Heathrow to Bogota will have been a horribly long journey and I get the impression this was a last minute decision. Still, he got the win!

Re all the  points being defended in the couple of months, I have to say I'm quite worried about Dan E.  If he can't reproduce the heroics of last year or gets injured, his points total could more than halve and he'd find himself ranked in low 200's.

Anyway, it's nice to see a Brit travelling to S. America to play on the dirt, it doesn't happen often!  Good luck today!

It's on hard courts isn't it?!

Gonzalez was playing decent singles 3-4 years ago. He got inside top 200 I think and then got injured and decided to become a doubles specialist after that. So not that surprised that he gave Ward a run for his money!

Correct - even though the venue would suggest clay.

He also won his QR1 only losing 3 games against someone ranked in the 400's so I agree no surprise.

I tried watching the stream for a few games but it is quite literally painful to watch.

If the stats are correct, Wardy only won 2 points on the Arevalo serve in the entire 1st set.

Has Wardy woken up ? From 2-0* down in the 2nd set, he wins 3 games in a row to lead with a break at *3-2

Much better hitting from Wardy, clean aggressive strokes. Looked easily in control.
