It's funny how last year he seemed able to win in Challenger qualies at will but kept getting upset early in Futures.

Motivation maybe? Certainly seems to have sorted whatever the issue was!

Alex was absolutely cruising but he's just lost his serve at the crucial time! Now 5-4*

Alex had a set point in that game but couldn't convert and they went to a tiebreak, thankfully he won it 7-4!

Less stressful second set please, Alex!

Ok, that was too much to ask, 5 breaks out of 6 games leaves Alex 2-4* down!

Alex has retired, which isn't a shock considering the way things were going.

Hope it's nothing serious, he's been in fine form of late!

Not the way you want a winning streak to end, is it.

L16: (3) Alex Ward WR 317 lost to Anton Zaitsev (RUS) WR 393 (CH 382 in May) by 6-7(4) 5-2 ret.

Hopefully just some mild strain after playing so much recently, it would be very sad to see his climb back up the rankings derailed now.

Ah pity. I had thought that this 15K+H tournament choice would probably be very beneficial.

Just hope Alex will be OK for his scheduled tournaments over the next few weeks.

It seems Alex has an arm injury.

Gutted to have pulled out of my match today, unfortunately my arm wasn't agreeing with me. Going to see my physio in London tomorrow morning

Hope it is just a precaution and he is back on court soon. Don't want him to lose his current momentum.

Indeed - one wishes him all the best. At least it is heartening to remember that his current run of good form started just after he had to take some time out because of injuries ... so he doesn't seem to be someone for whom a time out would necessarily be damaging.
