Dan is showing (to me anyway) that he has the potential to actually be a very handy player. Solid off both wings, doesn't make a lot of errors - his trouble is when he plays big servers!
Well, he certainly hasn't got a big server today.
Not a big fan of Guez at the best of times but he normally has a decent-ish serve and today something is clearly wrong.
Dan is keeping his head well though (as Dan does). No mercy.
Great to see Dan follow up on his impressive performance at Wimby, he's been able to move up a level this year, aided by some great work off the court.
Well, Guez most certainly was not 100%. Some injury of some sort.
But you can only beat what's in front of you.
Big well done to Dan.
And interesting to hear your opinions, Phil, from seeing him live. On TV/stream, he certainly seems to have bulked up a bit and to be really fit - good to hear that that's confirmed by 'live' viewings too.
There was a recent article about what top players fear most and they said that it's not a great forehand/service whatever. What they fear most is 100% intensity, a guy who keeps up that amazing level of mental and physical effort right to the end (a Djoko/Nadal sort).
And Dan's good at that. So allez, Dan - next round :::)))
Fantastic & highly professional win for Dan, even if Guez was a bit off!
L16: Dan Cox WR 224 beat (6) David Guez (FRA) WR 172 (CH 116 in 2010) by 2 & 0
QF: Dan Cox WR 224 v (2) Gilles Müller (LUX) WR 84 (CH 42 in 2011)
H2H 0-1 - Müller won 3 & 4 in Shenzhen in April (& qualified and reached R2 at Wimbledon)
Hopefully we'll only have one British doubles player unhappy after the quarters, Muller has been pretty much unbeatable at this level this year, but it should be a good barometer on how Coxy is progressing whatever the result.
