Congrats to @TobyMartin93 in his first Futures final. Well done from all at Bath. "Work hard and good things happen just don't know when!"
I thought that Jean-Yves would have the upper hand - watched him on livestream a bit because he seems to always come up against the Brits - he's played Dan S and James W and Josh Milton and Kyle twice in the last 6 months or so. He's a nice player.
Even in defeat, I think Liam stepped it up this week, so that is a positive going forward, but great to see Toby make the finals, had a very solid progressive season so far so long may that continue.

He was taken to 3 sets by an unranked player and by a player outside the top 1000. He beat Luke who is also in terrible form and was then comfortably beaten by a 26 year old ranked 711 (CH of 485 5 years ago). I see nothing in these results that can reasonably described as stepping it up.
R1 : Beat UNR American in 3 sets.
R2 : Beat WR 1165 American in 3 sets.
QF : Beat a seemingly also bit off song WR 572 Luke in straight sets.
SF : Lost to WR 711 Frenchman in straight sets.
I'm all for looking for positives ( honest ! ), but am I missing something here ?
Great to see Toby reach the final. Hope it gives him confidence, and he can follow by getting to later stages much more often. All the best to him for tomorrow.
I really don't want to be too harsh on Liam because as I have said before that he comes across as a really nice guy and I wish him well. However I just don't see any reason at all for optimism. At the moment all indicators are that Liam was a decent junior who failed to make the transition. Thus far in his career he has beaten only one top 200 player and that was 3 years at Wimbledon qualifying when he played a clay courter who avoids grass like the plague. He is also has only one win against a player ranked 200-300 (Ti Chen WR 287, earlier this year) and very few wins against players ranked 300-400.
I'm not disagreeing with any of you about Liam's results (they haven't been great, by any stretch of the imagination) but just to say that Jean-Yves Aubone is American, not French, who - in the last 12 months - lost by a whisker to:
he also made the final last week so obviously isn't playing too badly.
However, net net, I agree with RJA in that - in the big picture - the problem is that Liam, despite being WR 390 or whatever, has barely beaten any better ranked players, or even come close. And when you see him play it's hard to see where the big step up is going to come from. But he's still young . . .
