Yeah that horror volley from Sam is going to cost her any chance of keeping this set close. Expect Sharapova to motor away now.
Real shame, wasn't it ? And only because, at the level she's used to playing at, not a single player would have got it up and back - Sam looked gobsmacked that it came back over. But what an experience, in front of that size crowd and all the cheering. Go Sam.
Sam had 4 opportunities in that first set, missed them all. Even against Sharapova for someone like Sam it's fine margins, she really should have another few games on the board, but because she didn't take her chances it looks like she could be on the way to a 61 60 drubbing.
Scoreline expected, performance much better than I had hoped. Played some nice stuff, a few really great points, and actually she was picking all the right shots but not quite able to pull them off.
Deserved a few more games and to stretch it over the hour (coming in at 56minutes)
Hard to see where it's all gone wrong this year since the injury as she's doing the right things. Confidence mainly I think.
I thought Sam started out ok (obviously helped by Shazza serving so many faults early on) and, as PaulM said, she had her chances in the 1st set. She did go on to lose 1 & 0 though, but apart from the score, nowhere near as bad as I thought it might be given her indifferent form since coming back from injury.
