Weeks 26 & 27: Wimbledon (grass) - doubles

There seems to be a plethora of SW19-related posts on here now, so I thought I'd rev up for the men's doubles, since the wild cards have now been announced:  Evo & Dino, Colin & Ross, Ken & Neal Skupski, Ed Corrie & Dan S & Jamie D & Gilles Müller. smile  The last two have not been assigned & will go to the next DAs.  I assume Dom & TCH & Jamie & John will be in on ranking.  Here's hoping Lewis & Marcus & Dave & Sean can make it through qualies to join them.

Unless I'm much mistaken, this will be Jamie Delgado's 20th consecutive Wimbledon!  Some record!

Ken and Neal didn't need the wild card, they made it anyway, so Kyle got a wild card with Stakhovsky.

Just like at Queen's Jamie and John will play Evo and Dino.

I am sure I am not not the only person to be disappointed to see both Jonny Marray and Freddie Nielson playing doubles at Wimbledon but not as a pairing. It would have been great to see them back together, even if it was only for this tournament.

Indeed you are not, Bob.  I've been away for a few days (mater was 95 on Wednesday, so I felt in duty bound to head up to the wild & woolly north east for the occasion!), so was unaware of the draw until shortly before I posted.  Could hardly believe my eyes when I saw that Jonny had teamed up with JPS & Freddie with the Swede.  Surely both deserve better, but maybe they felt they'd be unable to recreate the magic of two years ago if they got back together.  I might add that I have no inside knowledge.  That is sheer speculation on my part...

Quite a nice article about Ken & Neal in today's Times.  Subscription of course required to read it on-line...

Sorry, "Kyle currently has no doubles ranking", but is part of a pair receiving a Wimbledon doubles MD WC.

I was a bit unsure about the Evo / James award, but the Kyle one really does take the biscuit.

I have some understanding of really highly ranked singles players being able to use singles rankings for doubles entries, but relatively humdrum singles rankings ( not good enough to get into the singles draw without a WC ) being evidently used as the case for doubles MD WCs ? Not for me.

PS : I don't blame the guys for accepting these WCs :)

In the normal course of things I completely agree with you, but did timing play a role? If Ken & Neal got into the main draw after qualifying started then weren't the Brits next in line already the recipients of QWCs and therefore ineligible for a main draw one?

Ken and Neal made the main draw before qualifying started as they were on the original acceptance list.

It's best of 5 isn't it?

Ken and Neal deserve to pick up some decent points and prize money this time.

OK, I haven't followed this but, just looking now, could someone tell me how on earth James Ward and Dan Evans got a doubles main draw wildcard ???

I thought the cut-off was 400 ? And they seem to have a ranking of about 2000 (two thousand !).

And don't play doubles. Didn't play doubles for the Davis Cup as far as I can remember. Were 'lucky' anyway to get a MD WC in the singles.

What gives ?
