Sorry, but such a swing is not at all unusual in women's tennis with often many still close games. I'd say that it is not generally really falling apart. Four games, two breaks, is all it was
But to say it about Naomi on her comeback ( and I do care who it was ) against the WR 240, without I presume seeing it at all, does seem harsh to me, very possibly wrong, and just a bit of a nonsense.
You would expect her play to be a bit up and down to start with, so that is an amazingly good result after being out for 3 years, her career high was 174 in 2010.
I spoke to Naomi last year in Edinburgh and I asked if she planned to come back and she said No she was very happy coaching. Having said that if she is coming back that is great she is not too old! Anyway a win is a win even though Rodionova retired. Naomi is her previous career would have been too good for Rodionova
What a load of rubbish, Naomi hasn't played a competitive match for soooo long, what do you expect. Just so pleased she's made it through to the next round even if it is by retirement.
There are some very effective treatments out there now for eating disorders and depression so if Cav can get/has got her head in a better place I think there's every chance she could make a successful return - and the fact she's entered here tells me that surely she's at least thinking about it.
The acid test for her would not be so much an event like this but one held in a freezing cold indoor centre in Outer Mongolia in front of 2 spectators and with no umpire or line judge. I think she should stick with it for now - she's still young enough and she can always go back to coaching later on.
I think it's fair to say Naomi did "fall apart" in the second set but I think we can all agree it was understandable. Also, if we think of her style of play, it's not surprising that she can be a bit up and down, especially after being out for so long. Regardless of the manner in which she ultimately won, however, I think this is the result of the day.
A lot of nonsense on here. Falling apart? Well if people really think that Katy must have fallen apart in the 2nd set of her match at 4-0 down. Like was said earlier women's game is full of streaks like that Jokos matches are always like that.
Well done Naomi point in the bag too. She could easily be too 500 by year end if she wanted to. Whether or not it would suit her with all that is required is another thing. I suspect it's a bit of summer exercise and something to enjoy which is fair enough especially as she is good enough to compete.
How about this? Let's just say the second set fell apart, regardless of whether it was due to Rodionova's improved play or a dip in Cavaday's play. If you go from 2-1, with a break, to losing a set 6-2, something obviously went wrong. This is in no way a knock on Cav. I think the fact that she's back playing (and winning) is fantastic. I really hope she has the desire to compete on the tour on a regular basis again because she is an exceptional talent.
When Priesty started his above post 'There are some very effective treatments out there...', I actually imagined that he might be about to say something else :)

From my own experience, the treatment for both depression and eating disorders are outdated and completely poor. Of course, if she has money, it may be better on the greener side!
Anyhow, I wouldn't say that that is inherently 'falling apart'. Sometimes the opponents balls just fit themselves into the tiniest of corners, and without further statistics, I think it's very rash.
Let's hope that her comeback continues on an upwards slide.
