Hmm, I don't know where I got that it is normally initially a maximum of 8 British ( MD + Q ) WCs pre the Q WC play-offs ( LTA ? ), but I certainly understood that to be the case for both the men and women.
I did think this had been followed in recent years, with the 8 being then topped up to 10 with 2 from the Q WC play- offs and usually topped up further ( normally from the Q WC play-offs ) if there remained spare Q WC places available.
I was certainly expecting an initial announcement of not more than 8 GB WCs for both the men and women, but if this is all a "complete myth" perhaps there will be more.
It's not a myth - it has been the case for some years now that the LTA can recommend up to 8 men and 8 women for WCs (main draw and qualifying combined) but the AELTC can reject them and/or award more. Well I would be very surprised if when the LTA make their recommendations it doesn't go something like this.
This year more than 8 players meet our usual criteria for wild cards therefore we would like to recommend more than 8. If you (the AELTC) think this is in inappropriate then the first 8 we would recommend are A,B,C, etc. We do however hope you will consider to X,Y and Z
The idea that there is a blanket limit on recommendations is palpably absurd. The LTA can recommend what ever they like, what the AELTC then choose to do is up to them.
It does look like 5 Brits will get main draw wild cards. Evo, Ward and Edmund all got wild cards into Eastbourne so must be getting Wimbledon ones and Cox and Smethurst also made the top 250 so it would be very harsh if they don't get one. I then find it very hard to believe that only 3 (+2 play off) qualifying wild cards will go to Brits.

Were there not 8 British men in the qualifiers at Roehampton last year or to use a good Scottish word am I "havering"
I do certainly see the case for it being it being rather absurd to have a blanket limit of 8.
I won't be at all surprised if we end up with more than 8+2 ( as previously ), but anyway I am glad that my faculties are still in reasonable working order and I am not completely inventing stuff :)
A passable match from Oli with some good skills here and there, but Rhyne was singularly unimpressive and Oli loses energy/dynamism right at important phases in the match and makes some strange/poor shot selections - a match that got away, really.
The LTA initially recommend a maximum of 8. More than 8 Brits can of course end up with wildcards though (as is almost always the case once you fill up qualies). The AELTC may go ahead and select some themselves, or they may give wildcards back to the LTA to allocate (usually how you end up with way more than 2 wildcards coming out of pre-qualifying)
But tomorrow, I'd very very surprised if more than 8 men and 8 women feature, and it is possible it could be less (although this year that seems particularly unlikely on the mens side)

While that might be the case they haven't been in this position, where so many people meet their criteria, since they brought out these criteria so it is possible, and I would say desirable, that things now change.
