Qualifying is a nightmare here by Challenger standards, with the top seeds in each section all in the top 200 - it looks like they would all have got into the main draw direct had they entered on time. Other than that, a few more top 500 players and assorted juniors, doubles specialists and other lower-ranked players.
Dan Smethurst is a direct acceptance and it looks like Dave and Kyle have scraped in too. The next highest-ranked Brits who are not in qualies here or a Queen's and are not known to be elsewhere (like Alex Ward) are Oli, Marcus, Ed, Liam and Ashley, though they can't all get wild cards, obviously.

That's a bit of a ( bad ) joke, all 4 top seeds ( i.e. these theoretically seeded to qualify ) all being top 200 players.
Maybe there should be a limit of say 2 players allowed into the qualifying draw that wouldn't have got direct acceptance into the main draw if they had entered on time rather than have everyone else having a top 200 player in their qualifying section.

I don't see the logic of limiting it to 2. All that means is that half of the players in the draw get screwed as opposed to all of them. I am increasingly of the opinion that there should be a blanket ban on anyone who would have made the main draw (original cut) from entering qualifying. Challenger qualifying is a mugs game as it is, with players often winning a couple of decent matches only to get no ranking points and no prize money. The possibility of coming up against someone who should be in the main draw only makes things even more unreasonable.
Yes, I do see what you mean, RJA. I was just kind of thinking maybe there were occasionally reasons / justifications so at least guys would have a chance in the draw to avoid being 'screwed'. But maybe not.
Also, I hadn't quite worked out how you limit it if 4 or 5 such characters appear. First to sign in or what ?
I think this is still a thought process in progress...

Is that a Career High Ranking scalp for Luke
On a more serious note, what is going on. Wang has not entered the MD even though he would have got in on ranking. So he has clearly made a late decision to enter and been stuck in the qualies. Then he withdraws without hitting a ball having denied somebody else the chance to enter. If it is a case of borderline fitness due to injury perhaps he can claim some mitigating circumstances, but otherwise, that is a pretty lame effort in my book.

Re. the first two opponents - Soeda retired in his last match, which was in RG qualies against Pavic, who went on to qualify before losing to Gilles Simon in R1.
