RE: Week 24 - WTA Premier ($710,000) - Birmingham, UK - Grass

Another excellent result for Katy. Normally I am conservative about giving Wimbledon wildcards to players who step up in the grass court season, as there are lots of precedents for players taking the odd scalp, picking up big points and finding they are unable to replicate that on other surfaces, thus hindering their career progress. However Katy has put together a series of good performances, including the one against eventual champion Pliskova which I saw (little to choose between them in rallies, with Pliskova winning because of more potent serve and solidity on the key breakpoints), and has shown considerable resilience both in this run and in her junior career not to be phased by a heavy defeat at Wimbledon (winning a round is more of a concern, as it would accelerate her ranking rather more than is desirable for a player learning her trade, who needs the experience of grinding through challenger qualies week in week out for a while). Even so her game is more transferable to other surfaces than many who have prospered in the grass season with big serves and ability to win shorter rallies, so I will be happy to see her offered a main draw wildcard.

Wow, this I did NOT expect. Wonderful texted tweet to receive when I'm just getting back in the car with my week's shopping biggrin

Defo think a Wimbledon MDWC is deserved now, and she seems to be the type who could take it in her stride if handed bakery products by a top tenner. Agree with David about the need to continue in challenger qualies for a bit afterwards too, although she seems to be in twitter contact with Jo Durie who I'm sure will give her some good advice.

Katy seriously impressed me last week and that's not hyperbole, I'm not sure about a Wimby MDWC but I'm not against it either.

In the rankings predictions at the start of the year I gave Katy her highest prediction at 215, now even that is beginning to look an underestimate.

Ok so I think everyone would agree with my earlier post now that she has overtaken Tara and Sam now . I will also say one main Draw win and a Wimbledon WC should be granted. Otherwise a QWC. I'm sure confidence wise she would do just as well and rankings wise it might take her into the top 300 is she qualified.

Over to you Katy, our seats are wobbly waiting to fall over please

That was quite a post, Jaggy, after one top 300 win ( actually I think originally before she'd won any ? ).

This week's lottery numbers, please :)

I'm waiting with bated breath for what you'll say if Katy now draws Hev, beats her and then beats JoKo in R2 wink

I'd rather she didn't draw Hev in R1 though!

Neither would I. Haven't looked at who she might get in round 1. Will go look now

I actually wouldn't particularly mind. Be rather interesting. And either Heather goes through or another remarkable stride by Katy

But given that I would hope and expect Heather to be pretty likely to beat any other qualifier, maybe better that Katy takes her chances elsewhere.

Then again, I think Heather is more likely to lose to another qualifier than Katy is to beat an alternative player.

Oh, I don't know, whatever :)

I've just looked at the schedule for tomorrow - makes me hopping mad! OK it's the only day I want to go for the whole time - 16 singles being played with 4 Brits in the draw - so what have we got? 1 playing - Katy - and out on court 3 - what an insult to her? why not put her on centre court?

Tough match for Katy but might catch Giorgi cold

A match Hev should win as I've never rated Wozniak but not straightforward at all
