Jo does get the break, and then there is a long tussle of a game at 5-3*
Jo saves 4 game points, then misses a set point (too tentative) then another (weak drop shot attempt lands half way up the net), then another (good serve from Nara) then gets the set when Nara plays possibly the worst smash I have ever seen in my life (it was a pretty poor lob, Nara was in position, and completely mis-hit it miles wide and long).
Oh Naomi. Up 30-15 she misses a routing inside-out forehand into the low part of the net, then BZS gets a dead net cord to get a break point, and takes it.
Naomi was reasonably competitive but conceded far too many unreturned serves. Had a chance to break back at 3-4* in the final set but fired a forehand long when in control of the rally. Backhand wasn't anywhere near its best.
She fought back so hard in the third, from a break down, and had a point for 5-5, but couldn't complete it.
And the fightback stemmed from her becoming more aggressive again. That passive play in the middle killed her, and hopefully it really hits home that everything she has been doing on the practice court and in matches to keep intense, aggressive and positive must be done right to the bitter end.
Real shame.
Naomi fought hard and had her chances but went down 57 64 63. Encouraging though I think, she played some very good stuff.
Heather was in complete control of that match at 6-2 *4-1 and there is no way she should have lost from there, but these things happen and the important thing is she learns from the match and avoids future matches going wrong in the same way. Her fighting spirit nearly saw her mount another comeback but she can't always rely on comebacks to win matches, especially against higher ranked opponents who tend to be much better front runners than lower ranked opponents.
It's a shame because in the first part of the match she continued to show that her game is at a different level to previous years.
